Anyone rehomed a greyhound? How did it go for you?

I'm so excited after debating for a long time DH and I (and DD and DS of course) are hoping to rehome a greyhound soon.

Wondering if anyone else on MN has rehomed one and how did it go?

No, wangle, but didn't want this to reach the bottom. DH used to be a bursar at a local school and the only dogs he would allow on the school fields were two the housemaster had rehomed. They were safe, loving dogs.

Good luck.

Unlike our border collie who would nip anything/cyclist/any other thing you care to mention in sight!

earlgrey · 20/05/2007 10:16

Eff. Did I say D H????

Wonders off for a reality check ....

I always see this and advertised so well done for going for it. As an aside I found out recently (because I applied for one) that Hearing Dogs will never train a greyhound or a border collie.

Greyhounds are apparently very lazy and enjoy sleeping too much, and border collies are too clever and get bored with the repetitive tasks.

Hope you find a lovely dog.

Thank you for your comments

So far we have had negative comments from everyone we have spoken to. What on EARTH would you want to get a dog for sigh

I think we have alot to offer a dog especially one we can rehome. Bugger the lot of them is what I say

Anyone else?

Not a greyhound but a lurcher, half greyhound half wolfhound.
The laziest most gentle dog in the world. I had her for six months before I heard her bark.

They need very little exercise and spend most of their time lying on their backs asleep.

Highly recommended!

Will be def getting either another lurcher or a greyhound once the children are a little older.

Greyhounds are beautiful! They're like cats- lazy and happy to sit around all day! Call it Roger thats a great name for a greyhound! They are sight hounds though so will leg it after all small furry things!

PrincessPeaHead · 20/05/2007 19:22

greyhounds are just lovely. they need 10 mins of mad exercise each day and then they flake out for the rest of the day. such beautiful gentle dogs. enjoy!

Thank you for your comments. Have decided definately to go for a greyhound rescue and will make contact with our local rescue branch this week.

Am aiming to get a dog during the beginning of the half term (so in roughly eight weeks) so have plenty of time to settle him/her before back to work in September.

Sooooo excited!

i'd love to see a pic when you get her

our next dogs will be greyhounds (but probably in about 10 years, our current dogs are only 5 and 3)

tinymum · 21/05/2007 10:26

We have a greyhound. We got him from Tia Greyhound and Lurcher rescue.....they have a great website with all the dogs on it.

We have had a few dogs over the years, and loved them all, but Greyhounds are now my firm favourites. Beautiful, dignified and loving....and very deserving of a family home considering what most of them have been through.

wangle99 · 21/05/2007 15:55

PrincessPeaHead - no problem I shall be posting pics everywhere!!!

Phoned the lady who is in charge of our local branch - she has currently lost her voice so is going to phone me back for a chat tomorrow and to make arrangements to visit us for a home check.

I really hope we are suitable.

I am sooooo . We have looked into getting a Greyhound rescue dog but have decided to wait till Dd and the bump are older. Also, we have two house cats so, in order to be fair to them,we need to wait. God, I hate it when I'm all sensible!

Itsthawooluff · 21/05/2007 16:03

We rehomed 2 greyhounds from Dogs Trust. They are lovely. Either 40 mph round the fields or fast asleep on their beds. They like their comfort and are "very food motivated".

Any small fluffy things - cats, rabbits other small dogs are potentially chase targets though, so when we take them for a walk they wear muzzles, just in case they set off after the neighbours cat. Makes them look dead 'ard, but they are such wimps in real life.

They are taking a while to settle in with our GSD, and we keep having the odd scrap - which the greyhounds start, but end up coming out of worse off. They are so gentle around the children though, and are a lot cuddlier than my GSD.

bananabump · 21/05/2007 16:09

We had a couple of greyhound/whippet/lurcher types when I was growing up, and they truly are the gentlest dogs, very sweet and undemanding. Someone said they chase rabbits etc and they really do in my experience, one of ours also chased sheep when he had the chance.

They're all legs so they aren't very "cuddly" but imho they're a lot sweeter than little yappy dogs and they're intensely loyal. Happiest snuggled against your leg!

ThisIsDavinaPleaseDoNotSwear · 21/05/2007 16:28

wrangle where abouts in the country do you live and do you have cats or children? (I know of a beautiful greyhound who needs a home )

wangle99 · 21/05/2007 18:51

We are in Cornwall (which is bound to be miles from where you are Thisisdavina..), have two children - DD is 10 next month and DS is 3.5. Both have been brought up with animals (cats and dogs). We have two cats but they are stupid and docile and never run anywhere so highly unlikely to be chased! Cats are used to dogs as we live next door to PIL and they have a whippet/collie cross.

I'm so excited as everyone says how wonderful pets they make, bearing this in mind I can't believe more people don't have them!

Argh she hasn't phoned me back am presuming she has still got no voice not that she's decided she doesn't like the sound of me lol

My Mum has a Greyhound. He is a beautiful, lazy, friendly dog. He got on really well with me dc when they were little. Our only problem was his tail wagging when he got excited! It was toddler height and they often got a whipping.

I had been looking into rehoming a Greyhound or lurcher but the particular people i got hold of said they don't rehome dogs with children under 6. My youngest is nearly 3. Not sure if anywhere else has this policy. I hope not.

wangle99 · 22/05/2007 21:28

The lady phoned back she spoke to DH as I was out, asked a few questions and is coming around on Friday to see us all.

Tortoise - she does know we have children as originally we spoke to her at a car boot sale where she was raising funds. I hope she doesn't say no as DS is only 3.5 BUT is very used to dogs.

Fingers crossed!

Good luck Wangle.
I have been googling for other places near by which re-home greyhounds. Not much around in my area that i can find. I am really keen to have one.

tortoise · 22/05/2007 21:34

Can i just ask where you will be getting one from? I see you are in cornwall so not that far from me in Somerset!
