Our dog has a slight flea allergy and often ends up chewing off his fur around his hips and tail.
We usually use Frontline from the vet.

Just wondering what wise mners use

Frontline but buy it from petdrugsonline.com. Much cheaper!

SugaryBits · 19/05/2007 19:53

oops it's .co.uk

EvilSmellingBugger · 19/05/2007 19:56

How do you go about getting a prescription for ordering online? Do I get it from the vet?

He still gets problems after frontlining him though. Is that the best on the market?

The basic Frontline you don't need a prescription for but for the combi ones you can print out a form to take to the vet or just get them to write a prescription. They might not like it very much but they are obliged to do this if you request it.

I think Frontline probably is the best. Maybe different things work better for different animals but generally vets stock Frontline, which makes me think it is probably most effective.

SugaryBits · 19/05/2007 20:11

He may still have a reaction if a flea jumps onto him as the Frontline only kills the flea when it has bitten IIRC

They drive him nuts poor dog

Frontline is a contact killer and does not require the fleas to bite to die. Better than Frontline is Frontline Combo that also treats the environment where the pet goes. Unless you treat all cats/dogs in a house and also treat the environment where they live you will not get on top of the problem. If you choose to use the Frontline rather than the Frontline Combo make sure you get a decent household spray such as Indorex. If you have a heavy flea issue already it probably wouldn't hurt to treat the house with a spray even if you use the combo.

EvilSmellingBugger · 20/05/2007 18:42

Thanks, will look into the combo.
I usually spot fleas but not seen one yet.
Treated him with cheap Wilkos drops last week to tide him over for a week or two till we find something with a bit of umpf to it

We have this problem with our cats, they both have a severe flea allergy and nothing solves it for more than two weeks

Hoping we'll eventually find something that keeps it under control.

Another one you can bu from your vets is advocate/ stronghold. unlike frontline it goes into the blood stream and treats the eggs and lavae aswell as the adult fleas. It also treats ear mites and round worm to boot
I use it on my pets as they always develop a reaction from flea bites and I find it better than frontline.
each animal is different so perhaps give it a go and see how you find it, but it does sound like he has had a reaction, if it doesnt clear up I would take him to the vets so he can have an anti-scratch injection and and anti-inflammatory.

We use stronghold for our Golden Retriever, we've never so much as seen a flea....ever!
