Hi

Our 5 year old cat Hilly has obviously been in a fight, I think she needs to see a vet. DH said not necessary. What would you do?

I'm on bed rest at the moment so would need him to agree Grin

She's eating, drinking, behaving normally. Maybe a bit more clingy than usual.

Any advice appreciated

Personally I would stick a bit sudocrem on it and out with the tuna!

My cats are always scrapping. I no longer take them to the vet straight away - I soon discovered they would always treat them whether they needed it or not and it would cost me £100 a pop. I have some metcalm here which I give them a dose of and clean them up with cooled boiled salty water. I then keep a very close eye - if they seem remotely poorly or it gets at all worse then it's straight to the vets cos cat mouths are full of nasty germs that can cause infections.

Only thing I would say as its a friday, if your cat does take a turn for the worst over the weekend it'll cost a fortune!!

If she's behaving normally and eating and drinking likely she's fine and it will heal

Lightsong · 18/05/2018 14:33

Are you sure it's from fighting? My cat got a spot just where your is on that pic. It actually happened twice. The first time the vet squeezed it, gave antibiotics, inflammatory injection and charged me £160. The second time I washed it and put sudocrem on and it healed over fine in a few days. I read that using plastic food bowls can cause spots on cats chins.

Nah. I wouldn't go to the doctor for that, myself. Keep an eye on it but it should be okay without attention.

Kidssendingmenuts · 18/05/2018 14:51

No doesn't need a vet for that I'm sure. I'd clean with cooled boiled water and some salt in it and give it a clean each day. If it was hanging off and al the way through then yes, but the fact it's not bothering them also would point towards not needing a vet

I wouldn't even think to go to get for that unless cat unwell

WatchoutDSisdriving · 18/05/2018 15:09

Another one here saying to clean it with cotton wool and just keep a close eye to check it doesn't get infected. Otherwise it'll cost you £80 or more for the vet to do the same and give a precautionary antibiotic jab.

Obviously if it shows any signs of getting worse or doesn't improve in a day or two or the cat shows signs of distress then off to the vet.

Kamma89 · 18/05/2018 15:33

Thanks for the reassuring responses. Very informative. Didn't know you could use sudo on a cat! She's very docile so I probably could clean without too much protest.

I'm fairly sure it was a fight as I heard one early this morning & she belted up to my room shortly after.

Will monitor this weekend, fully insured but hope not to have to claim.

How’s your cat doing now OP?

Kamma89 · 22/05/2018 08:24

Seems totally back to normal Smile Allowed me to clean area with salt water. Still eating, drinking & playing as normal. Thanks for saving me a vet bill MN!

That’s good to hear Smile

I think we all run off to the vet for small things we wouldn’t bother taking our child to the doctors for, I know I am guilty of that. Perhaps it’s because they can’t talk to us and tell us how bad it is or isn’t.

Anyway glad he is back to normal now.

Effendi · 22/05/2018 16:02

We have a lot of cats and for small injuries like this we put Sudocrem and keep an eye on it.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 22/05/2018 16:21

Pets at home do an antiseptic lotion for a fiver that's absolutely amazing!
