If your dog or cat is microchipped as a main form of ID, please get the dog's chip checked at the vet's reguarly. Had a dog into work today who had been scanned every 3 months routinely for his pet passport, and this visit his chip was missing from between the shoulder blades and did not set off the scanner. A full xray was performed, and the chip was finally located in his ear, bent in 2 and rendered useless. PLEASE get your dog's chip checked to make sure it hasn't migrated since this is a fairly common occurance (although usually just moves around the shoulder area and remains active!

It's not a life or death matter, but if your dog goes missing and you know the chip is in the elbow region (for example) when you let vets/shelters know, they can scan all dogs/cats fitting the description in that area just in case its your pet!
