Please help - my boy cat keeps weeing in the house!

He's 5 years old and has always done this occasionally. It's obviously a complete pain in the bum, but when he was first doing it and I mentioned it to my vet, she said it's just what boy cats do. That can't be right can it? Surely not all boy cats unrinate in their owners houses as a matter of course? Surely everyone would only have girl cats!

My big problem now is that I'm re-homing him (because I'm moving abroad, not because of his weeing - although I've been tempted in the past!). Obviously I need to warn potential new owners of this occasional habit, but I can only imagine that this will put them off completely, and if I don't warn them and they find out later, then they might want to get rid. I really want to find him a nice home, but worry that this will stop me from being able to.

So, is there ANYWAY I can get him to stop doing this? I'm desperate!

Is he neutered? it can be a tom cat problem. I know it's seems a bit mad but my friend had good results with a cat psychologist (different cat prob though) also Cat Confidential by Vicky Halls is a really good book. Additionally, try a big pet shop as they sell many deterrent sprays. I've had loads of boy cats and not had this problem so yiur vet is talking rubbish! Good luck!

My mums neutered male cat sprayed in the house all his life. Sorry.

Thanks for replies.

Yes, he's been neutured. I've not got time to look into cat psychologists or books, but thanks for the suggestions, I'll bear it in mind if I ever get a boy cat in the future. Will try a deterrent spray though, to see if that works.

You can get sth called Feliway from your vet, its a kind of pheromone thing I think, which you can get as a spray or a plug-in and it is supposed to calm cats and helps stop them peeing in the house.
We used it when we moved house and it made our mogs much calmer.

NutterlyUts · 12/05/2007 21:54

With male cats, basically once they start spraying they never stop, neutered or not. Which is why some cats don't spray, and some do on and off

I'd try the feliway tbh

Is he stressed about something? Has anything changed at home that he is worried about? Any new cats in the neighbourhood? You can get pheramone plug in things (can't remember what they are called) that could help. My cat started doing it when two young male cats moved in next door and he stopped when they left. (Although he has started doing it again sometimes, but I think he is just rude!)What sort of cat have you got?

skatergirl · 12/05/2007 21:57

Feliway, thats it.

whomovedmychocolate · 12/05/2007 21:59

Hiya, Skatergirl is right on the stress thing but I think you might find the problem is that he can still smell the last time he did it - even if you can't.

Are you able to find out where he has sprayed before? If so, get some biological washing powder and dissolve it in boiling water and swab the area (once it's cooled obviously - you don't want to burn your hand). Make sure you get each spot. This stops then pattern spraying.

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 22:26

whomoved is right about the washing liquid, do you have to do the boiling water bit? But this works, however you should also dab the area with meths once it has dried up, this should remove any of the odour which is attracting the cat back/.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/05/2007 09:10

The boiling water activates the enzymes in the biological washing powder. Biological washing powder contains enzymes which eat the fats in cat spray and make them go away. Otherwise they linger and the cat goes back for a do-over!

Thanks for the replies. I've just ordered some feliway. Have tried the washing detergent thing before, but will do that again.

Mine started doing it wen he had stones in his bladder that were making him feel the need to wee all the time, he's had 2 ops now to remove them, after he was fixed he stopped weeing.

I do think the Feliway thing is a good idea though as yours seems like it's more a territory thing.

I'm also having cat wee problems but outside with other cats coming into the garden and weeing as they smell our cats, they do it at the doors and windows so the whole outside stinks of wee no matter how many times I put bleach etc down.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/05/2007 11:00

sweetkitty - my cats had that - struvite crystals...don't suppose you buy those special biccies for them do you? I discovered recently you can buy them online at half the costs of them at the vets! (sorry for the hijack)
