Unwanted Cat visitor

Does anyone have any suggestions for stopping another cat making unwanted visits into their home?

It's an issue as I think it's a Tom as I can sometimes smell that unmistakeable scent of cat p**s. It also polishes off food our cat leaves.

My cat isn't bothered by the visits, in fact some mornings we've come downstairs and they've both been asleep on the sofa however it will bolt when it sees us.
I believe that it's the same cat that was a kitten last summer and was a regular visitor to our garden hence our cat not being bothered. We didn't encourage it, it's got very bold.

The cat flap is in the utility room which leads to kitchen and rest of the house. Our cat won't wear a collar so we can't install a special cat flap. If I keep utility room door closed I only half solve the problem at it'll spray over the units in there plus our cat won't have house access.

This morning I attempted to throw water over it as it legged it out but it upset my DDS as they thought I was cruel?

Any advice please?

Is your cat microchipped? We have a cat flap that reads the microchip in the back of the cats neck, rather than needing a collar tag. Expensive but well worth the money.

We have this one but I think Sureflap do one as well:

Don’t leave food out.
When you’re cat’s finished take the bowls away.

Borrow a dog for a few days.

pombal · 12/04/2018 11:22

It’s not cruel to throw water imo.
Cat just thinks ‘if I go there I get wet, I won’t go there’

Microchip cat flap. Life changing!

Microchip cat flap

37KAT · 12/04/2018 11:40

Thanks, I'll look at the cat flap, I didn't realise that there was such a thing.
He is microchipped. I'm not sure where the certificate is, I assume I could get the number from the vet.

DDS would like the suggestion of the dog for a few days, DH & Dcat not so much!

We have one next door but one who looks exactly like our boy. Ours is an indoor cat so sometimes we think we've accidently shut him out when in fact it's the other one casually strolling in. The first time I encountered this other cat I was rather drunk, picked him up took him inside and gave him a snuggle...until it hissed in my face and I was like, "omg that's not my cat" 😂 Maybe it's my fault and he thinks he lives here now? Lol

You don't need the microchip number. You just press the register button on the catflap and hold the cat up to it.

FALLENANGEL89

Ha ha.

Funnily enough our unwanted visitor is black and a similar size to our cat and likewise we have had confusion about which cat we're seeing.

ClareN83- thank you

You don't need the certificate or number of the microchip for it to work the flap, you just need to put the cat in the tunnel bit to programme it.

Batinahat · 12/04/2018 12:19

Microchip cat flap. Totally worth the money. We got one to get around similar problem of other cats letting themselves in our cat flap and it's been brilliant. You just "scan" the cat through the cat flap when you get it (tip - easier to do this before you put catflap onto the door!) Which then programmes the catflap to the scanned cats only. They are life changing! Batteries last a long time and there is a good warning light system for when they are running low.

Another vote for microchip flap.
Also can restrict times that they can come and go (ours is locked down at night)

autumnboys · 12/04/2018 12:23

Another vote for the microchip cat flap - but I think you will need the number, different makes of flap work with different lengths of microchip number.

susurration · 12/04/2018 12:57

Microchip cat flap all the way. It's fun waving your cat in front of it to register them. Suscat was nonplussed.

twinkletoedelephant · 12/04/2018 13:05

Be warned we spent a fortune on a microchip catflap .... Neighbours cat followed mine in nose to bum so the cat flat wasn't locked after mine came in.

37KAT · 12/04/2018 17:47

Thank you for your replies.
I'm going to look at getting a new cat flap. I also like the idea of locking him in at night too, we may find we have less dead (or alive) mice, birds to deal with in the morning 🙄😀 he's a hunter..

Throwing cold water over a stray cat is cruel, they are abused enough.

Please consider calling your local cats protection or any rescue to trap the cat and hopefully find him somewhere where he will be loved and cared for.

37KAT · 14/04/2018 07:36

BEAVERHAUSEN.

I do not believe that it's a stray cat as it is in good condition and looks well fed.

Put a paper collar around his neck if you can and see who calls to claim him.

37KAT · 30/04/2018 20:44

Just an update...
We've installed a microchip cat flap after your recommendations.
Our cat was micro chipped 8 years ago and it picked it up fine - the number wasn't required.
So far so good and I too would also suggest this product to stop uninvited furry visitors 😸🐈
