We have two cats , both 15 yrs old. The male cat was quite ill last summer nad had his thyroid glands out and made a very good recevory .

I have noticed of late that he is sleeping vitually all the time , I know that cats do that , but I went out at 9am came back at 4.30pm and he was still on the bed in same spot and didn't stir until the children disturbed him at 6pm. Agter a bit of food and a wee outside he is now asleep again.

I have also notice that his back legs are quite stiff and he is hobbling. I thought initally a couple of days ago it was because he had just worken up and was a bit stiff but it seems not the case.

He is off to the vet tomorrow to get checked , but I am concerned about him sleeping so much. The other cat, the same age has a bit more life .

Could the end be nigh for him ?

Unfortunately yes it could be. We also have two old cats although one acts half the age of the other. It could be that he's just got a cold and is sleeping it off, they do that. Or he could have had a fall and be recovering quietly. Fingers crossed that this is the case.

Not sure CU. I lost my 15 year old cat a few weeks ago (blood pressure complications). I know from my limited experience of thyroid probs that an underactive thyroid can make people feel very tired, lethargic and sleepy. Probably the same for cats. Might just need his thyroid tab does tweaking.

Thanks both , he has just been cuddling up with me on the sofa .

i don't think that puss's sleepiness is due to his lack of thyroid TBH. 15 is old old old in a kitty cat and he is probably slowing down some. If he is not going out to pee, then might he have a cystitis? Might explain the hobbling? How does his fur look? i have a feeling that kidneys are the route of this problem, i dont know why, just a feeling and at this age it woudlnt be a great surprise. Doesnt have to mean the end of the road though, maybe he just needs a pick me up. I remember a poem from when i was a child, it was called "cats sleep anywhere" i think its what they do

His fur looks , well , a bit matted, not as smoooth as his sisters. They checked his kidneys out after his op last year and all was OK, I just dont fancy trying to get another urine sample out of him.

Re a kidney probelm what should his fur be like ?

He is always pawing me for attention aswell , hence why we had a cuddle on the sofa then he just lay with his head on my lap.

Ahwwww he wants your company because he's sad (and possibly not feeling well). That's something. A lot of cats skulk off when unwell or dying and just ignore you. He obviously knows you love him very much.

Good luck today.

Oh... whomoved - you post made me cry. .

He is such a sweet cat , my children are good , they usually tell other children off when they are here and annoy the cats . They know he is getting old and that they have to look after him.

My youngest cried last year when he was left at the vet for his op ! So goodness knows what will happen when THAT awful time comes IYKWIM .

hope kitty is ok CUP. Sometimes when cats have a kidney problem their fur goes spikey and greasy looking, for some reason they call it starey, dont know why they do (their fur often just goes like this anyway and has nothing to do with the kidneys i hasten to add before that worries anyone unduly). The do tend to lose weight hand over fist as well so he is probably just being an old cat, how many old people do you know who sleep loads? But anyway, you are off to the vets so thats all good and hopefully they will sort him out. We have cats on our records up to about 20yrs, so puss may have another 5 to go!!!!! i do hope all is well.

Oh CaptainUnderpants I didn't mean to make you (well sadder). I hope it's all okay today.

Looks like a bit of arthritis - anti-inflam injection given , see how he is over the weekend and back to the vet on Monday.

His weight is good so not dropped anything so I suppose that is a good sign , in fact he has gained a little , but he is lying around all day !

So we see how he progresses over the weekend.

thanks everyone.

whomoved - I'm just a bit soft when it comes to animals !

That's great news I was wondering how you got on. You've cheered me up, so I can go to bed happy.

I'm just the same about my two cats, even the shitty bum'ed white one who smells like ripe brie!

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:24

awww, hope he feels better soon. I thought i'd managed to budge hubby on the cat issue, as we have cats using our herb garden as a litter basket. He said, if we had our own cat i doubt others would come around. Oh, so we CAN have a cat then? No - you know im allergic .
