My bird just died in my hands :-( I need to tell his story

My poor little lovebird, Longshot, has just given up the ghost, I don't even know what happened, I saw him flopping around on the bottom of the aviary, picked him up and his neck was all floppy so I think he broke it somehow, and he just looked at me and then closed his eyes and died.

He is called Longshot as when he was born 2 and a half years ago his mum rejected him as he was the runt and he became dangerously dehydrated so we had to hand feed him every 2 hours day and night for 2 weeks, DH even took him into work with him to feed. We fed his brothers and sisters as wellbut they only needed it every 4 as they weren't so ill. We were told by everyone he wouldn't make it but he did and he was the tamest cuddliest bird and used to hide under my hair.
DD loved him as he used to nibble on her fingers and groom her hair, the others aren't quite tame enough for that.

Last year he got into a fight and his eye was so badly damaged he could have lost it but we kept it clean and him healthy with antibiotic drops.

Until now.

I have just got back from the vets for them to have him cremated as normally we bury them on the beach but it is a bit hot and crowded today and I don't think I could bear to see him buried. They were so good and didn't even charge us as he is so weeny. They even got the vet to check he was dead as I couldn't even wrap him up in case he was still alive.

I still have 9 birdies but he was my special baby.

Sorry for the long post but I need to get it out of my system before DD wakes up and sees me crying again.

sorry about your birdy

I went to DH's work after the vets and they have all been lovely so am feeling a bit better, as one of them said, how much better for him to have been in my hands when he died rather than alone.

I think that what broke me is seeing him die, I have found birds dead after accidents/illness but never had one die that close to me IYSWIM.

So sorry to hear this. Losing a pet is incredibly upsetting. I still get a tear in my eye thinking about my lovely cat who died nearly three years ago.

shame, poor wee mite, from what you say, it rather sounds like a stroke to me, i'm sure you don't want to dwell on what might have happened but im only saying this so that you will know that he wouldnt have suffered as would have been pretty much unaware of what was happening to him.

You just have to remember that you gave him a life he very nearly didnt have so you must be happy for that and remember him fondly

sad for you

Meant to say, thanks for support. I know in the big scheme of things it's just a bird but he was my bird and I loved him.
