Yesterday we finally got our new lovely chocolate brown corner sofa and matching chair. We have been saving for it for ages and it was brilliant to get rid of our old horrid sofas.

Now I have 3 cats and 2 toddlers under 3 I know suicide for a sofa BUT last night before going to bed I covered the arm bits and most of the cushiosn with throws and thought it would be OK. So this morning on one of the arm rest bits theres a hole about 0.8 x 0.3 mm totally visible as you can see white underneath as it's chocolate brown. I could have cried it was in the house less than 24 hours and one of the cats has scratched it.

I can't keep them out the lounge at night as you have ti go through the lounge to get to the kitchen where their food/litter tray is also if you shut a door they tear up and ruin the carpet. They are mostly indoor cats so don't go out at night.

So I need something to protect the sofas. I am seriously considering bubble wrap tonight. Am also investing in a new scratching post for them as well see if that makes a difference.

Any ideas?

can you trim cat's nails?

sorry if it's a daft question but i do my rabbits to stop them digging

but wouldn't they just scratch more to resharpen them

claws are pretty important to a cat I believe

they do it to mark it too don't they?

there isn't much you can do

I would have put off buying a new sofa until the cat is dead and the toddlers are older

If you had seen the state of my old sofas you would know why I needed new ones.

Unfortunately I would have been waiting a long while as I have 3 cats and one is only 6.

Am going to make some plastic type arm rest cover things tonight see if that works.

Pretty impractical unfortunately but cats hate tinfoil-the noise it makes when they touch it anyway.
WOuld look hideous but if only at night then maybe worth a go....?
