Poorly boy at the vets

My beautiful boy Dcat didn't come to wake me this morning but it was so nice outside I thought he was enjoying the sun. He finally turned up at 10 looking very sorry for himself and was sick (on my brand new carpet). His poo had blood over it so I called the vet. They had an afternoon appointment so took him along, expecting a shot of antibiotics.
Got there and the lovely vet was very concerned about his bladder. She said it was solid and looked like a blocked urethra. She talked about unblocking it and maybe a catheter but had to leave to collect DS and now can't get through to them. It didn't sound like good news at all. DH can get there at 9ish to see my lovely boy but I'm so worried. Does anyone have experience of this and give me a positive story?

Its unclear from your post but I take it you left him there to unblock, did you sign a consent form agreeing to that? Blocked urethras are serious (as they can't pee and backs up to their kidneys) but usually once catheterised for a couple of days, some meds given and monitoring urine output after catheter has been removed they go back home again 😊. Possibly a change of diet will be required to help prevent this happening again but it can still reoccur.

An emergency has possibly come in and that's why the vet hasn't been able to update you on his progress as yet. I would give them a call about 30 mins after they open in the morning if you haven't heard from them by then as it gives them a chance to do a ward round and their plan for the in-patients for that day. Hope your lovely boy is feeling much better soon xx

Thanks vodka* I hadn't thought about an emergency. DH went there on his way home and the vet explained everything. They have drained his bladder and flushed him. The blockage has cleared but his kidney functions aren't great. They will retest his functions tomorrow evening to see if there's permanent damage. They said he can live 4-5 years with damage. Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery.
I've had a look at diet, and stress as the vet mentioned it. Dcat's little brother has recently got a bit antagonistic which maybe stressing him out. We will have to make a few lifestyle changes but it's a better problem to have.

@Manupprincess glad to hear that his blockage is cleared, hopefully his blood results are doing much better today. Stress can be a cause of this so if his little brother is bullying him it might be worth getting some Feliway diffusers to help calm him down.

I hope he is home soon for lots of cuddles 😊

@vodkafairy75 he's much better but needs another 48hours in hospital. I will get the defusers before he comes home.
I've been reading up on cats suddenly becoming aggressive to other cats - they could be the most neurotic animals of all time! Total little oddballs. But I do love them both.
