Visiting cats at Christmas - WWYD?

My DD and husband are coming for Christmas with their (neutered) tom 6 month old kitten and they are staying for about a week. We have an older tom, also neutered. In the past DD and partner stay for a night or two and we keep the cats separate, the kitten shut in one room downstairs, and only let out when our cat is safely upstairs asleep and shut in another room. However with Christmas we will have other people in the house and we would like to be able to keep all doors open so that people can socialise, and other visitors might forget to close doors. So, my question is: Is it worth introducing the cats and hoping they won't fight? Our cat (adopted as a stray a few years ago) is about 8 years old and we've no idea what he is like with other cats as we've never had a second one, and there don't seem to be any in the neighbourhood. We've no idea how he will react to meeting another cat. It's obviously going to be a nuisance keeping them separate for such a long time, but then cat fights and emergency visits to the vet are not my idea of a fun Christmas either! On previous occasions when DD has visited both cats have sniffed around in the absence of the other, and I think they probably twig that there's another cat somewhere. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Introduce them slowly so they can have a sniff, or swap some bedding. Make sure there’s a safe space for both to retreat to. There might be a bit of hissing and posturing!

It might be worth getting a plug in feliway difuser to calm them. The last thing you want is territorial spraying!

Thanks for the tips! I didn't think about spraying, I have seen my cat do this in the garden, would hate it if he did this indoors!
