Just want to repeat about getting a puppy through the cocker spaniel club. You pay more but worth it for peace of mind.

I have been looking for a cocker spaniel for a while and noticed that there seems to be a huge variation in the price - between £400 and £600. Can anyone tell me the possible reasons for this? All newborns by the way and not gender specific.

just to update you have found a pup today. Wen tto look at two breeders - huge difference in conditions etc. One was kennel club and the other was from epupz. Epupz one said it was a kennels. It was a normal home with a run of kennels at the end of a very small back garden. Dogs were lovely but the home was very dirty and the people admitted that they did it for the money. They wanted £500 per pup with excellent pedigree (although their paperwork looked like something anyone could print off a computer). The others were a family with their pet dog. The temperament of the mother was amazing and the family lovely. The pups were all in a room with a heater on all the time for them. The owner asked us quite a few questions whereas the first ones didn't ask a thing! It cost us £550 which I was much happier to pay. Just shows you really need to look around and in doing so i've heard quite a few bad reports of dogs on epupz. We get our pup in 4 weeks time. Its going to be exciting and frustrating I'm sure !

I didn't think of the pedigree aspect that's a good point.

appreciate not all epupz advertisers are bad and its all individual. The epupz breeder also wanted them to go at 6 weeks. Again just need to be careful and go on your instincts again. The pup we're getting is from a home with 3 young children so again just felt right.

Glad you found a pup from breeders you are happy with. I would also steer clear of epupz and the likes. Good breeders generally have a waiting list and thoroughly vet potential owners. Your breeder was right to ask plenty of questions. Remember a good breeder will be there for you throughout your dogs life, and should offer support whenever needed - so having a good rapport with them is important .

Re owning sire and dam: If the owners own both dogs it suggests that they chose the closest dog and not necessarily the best - so I would rarely buy for someone that owned both sire and dam. I would also want to know why the breeder wanted the litter and what attributes the sire and dam had that made them suitable for breeding.

Just to make it clear, but the Kennel Club do not recommend breeders. Any breeder can register pups providing that they abide by the Code of Ethics of the KC. The KC do not check out breeding/housing conditions etc. That is why the Breed Club is a great way of finding out about good breeders, they all know each other, their dogs and the conditions the dogs are kept in.

Good luck with your pup knat. Dog or bitch? What colour?

Also meant to add, well done for not buying from the first breeder. Unless the dogs are KC registered you have no way of proving that the pedigree papers you were shown by the first breeder were true or even that the dogs are purebred Cockers - saying that even the KC can get it wrong sometimes as the KC can only go on the information supplied by the breeder.

thanks joannie. He is a dog and gold. Looking forward to getting him now.
