i have two dogs,a 3 year old male,6month old bitch and just lately they have been chewing my house to bits.
NEVER had any problem with the oldest, pup came along and she was a chewer to begin with, nothing major though just things that the kids had left lying around, lego pieces etc

the last few days i have come home to my wooden shoe rack destroyed, wicker storage baskets and found a chunk out of one of my NEWLY fitted kitchen units.

last night i caught both dogs chewing the bannister, skirting boards and half the contents of the kids' toy boxes so i know its not just the pup i saw them both, smacked them and shouted at them whilst showing them what they have done.

i've just come home again tonight to find another kitchen unit wrecked and my dd's new sandals chewed to bits.

i have had enough, how i haven't drowned the little fekkers by now i do not know.i can't live like this,i don't know what to do!

Try spraying selected bits of tasty looking furniture with 'bitter apple' spray. You can buy it from pet shops for a few pounds and it really does work. I thinnk it is also called something like 'no bite'.

It is possible that they are doing it because they are bored.

Apart from the spray, try removing as much as possible of the things they are not allowed to chew, and leave out their own toys. I sometimes don't feed them all their breakfast and then scatter the rest of their dry food around the floors for them to spend hours searching for.

Give them a real bone each to chew on. If you only leave it out when you go out it remains exciting for them to chew on.

Mine love the toys that you fill with food and they have to roll around to get teh food out. Tubes filled with cream cheese or something more 'doggy' always go down well and keep them occupied for a long time.

Failing all of that, put them in a large dog cage with a few toys and bones.

I agree with Wrigglejiggle, the dogs may be bored.I used to have a dog that chewed stuff at first and we were told that they will chew if bored.
You can buy specialtoys which you stuff with food so the dog can chew it out,i think they are called Kongs.

ash- are these your Bichons?!!
Firstly I would show them who's boss by giving them the traditional Bichon hair style and then I would call up that Victoria woman off "Its me or the dog" who always wears tarty tight black clothing and ask her advice!
But seriously, how about calling up the vet or the RSPCA and get the number of a dog behaviour therapist and see what they say?

ash6605 · 13/04/2007 17:02

Yes MANUKA they are my bichons-the ones that i was praising the other day saying they were gorgeous, pleasant and friendly well bahaved dogs!!!Lol!
seriously they are lovely dogs in every other way except the chewing its doing my head in.
they have toys to chew but i obviously need to buy some that are more stimulating.i did look at those kongs but they are SO expensive, looks like i'm going to have to pull out for them though as it's better than pulling out for new kitchen doors and shoes every other day!!

I bought my crate off ebay for about £15. It has been a life saver.
I only use it at night and if I go out for 2 hours max in the day (he comes most places with me though). It would allow you to love them again and save what's left of your house!

Kongs are great but some dogs won't chew kongs when you first get them as they smell very strongly of rubber - try kicking them around the garden a bit before you put food in them for the dogs - they are really good as they are so indestructable.

My Golden Retriever has always been a chewer. He's three now, and (has been lucky to get to 3) has got better as he's got older. His repertoire includes: chewed door frames, bottom of kitchen units, chewed a honking great hole in the mattress on my bed, letters that get posted, we've had to install a post box to the outside of the house, he still regularly beheads teddies, and shreds all the filling all over the garden.

I think, as someone else suggested, your older dog, having not done this before, is now joining in with the puppy, thinking it's a bit of a hoot. My dog doesn't like being left, although he has the company of our other dog, and this is when he'll do it. Give them as much exercise as you possibly can, particularly when you're going to leave them for a few hours, this works well for me. Kongs are good, as are those tough hide chews that you can buy fairly inexpensively in Wilkinsons. Also those treat balls too, that they roll round to dispense treats, are good.

our two pulled off and chewed our CAR BUMPER and the handle of dd's bike yesterday
Man they are in the dog house.
ours have the kong toys with food in, get fed 2 meals a day and have more toys than the bloody 3 kids in this house.

Our GSD sleeps in his crate and goes in there whenever we are out. He uses it as a sort of den and dts know that it is his place and not to disturb him in there. The rescue where we got him as a puppy told us to crate train him from the beginning and rather than cruel he enjoys his bed.

If we didn't have the crate he would eat our house. Seriously, he chewed through a wooden dining chair while we were there. He is nearly 18 months now so not so bad. He destroyed the indestructible black Kong.

AnAngelWithin · 30/04/2007 12:26

firstly, you smacked your dog?? shouting at them and 'showing them what they have done' is giving them attention for what they have done, albeit bad. if thats how they can get attention, then they will do it.

have you considered crate training them? that way at least they couldn't cause any destruction.

AnAngelWithin · 30/04/2007 12:28

ad yes, kongs may be expensive but i am sure you have spent more than the price of 2 kongs just replacing the damage so far??
