Over the last 3 days our dog has been following our 10 month old bitch around constantly. He keeps sniffing her nether regions and anywhere she goes, he then sniffs and drools all over the floor.
He's never ever done this before so I can only presume its through the new dog he's doing it.

Does this sound like shes in heat or about to?

yes I think she is on heat - how are other dogs reacting to her? Has he tried to 'mount' her?

Keep them apart and keep her in otherwise you will have puppies on your hands!

Arghhhhhhh noooooo.

Well like I said the dog is acting weird. Constantly sniffing her parts and sniffing and drooling all over the floor where ever she goes.

I haven't seen him mount her yet. Should be quite amusing as shes a Chihuahua and he's a Beagle

warning, poss tmi for some folks.

from what i remember a friend telling me who is into breeding dogs so can be corrected by the experts.

when a bitch is 'heating up' a dog will follow her around more. it takes about 2 wks, i think, for her to come to full heat (ie ovulate) the dog will follow her around more avidly during this time and as she comes closer to ovulation will attempt to mount her.

she will only allow penetration when she is ready. you can check how 'ready' she is by pushing down firmly on her rump (just above her tail) if she moves her tail to one side, she is ready. if she tries to snap at your arm, or move away, then she is not.

bitches also have periods just at the start of her heat cycle (but if this is her first cycle, maybe not? dunno.)

I am sure you are only joking and yes the pups would be cute but PLEASE be sensible. She is only 10months old a puppy herself. You will really have to keep them apart and when the time comes that she IS interested in his advances it can be difficult. Can also be unpleasant for the dog, then can fret, loose weight and be quite unbearable for them.

Nbg · 10/04/2007 10:16

Oh god I am joking!

Have just found out I'm expecting number 3. The last thing I need is pups too!

Phew!! But seriously it can be a pain trying to keep them apart, especially the little critters, they can squeeze their way through anything. Have you got family that maybe the dog could go to for a while? Beagles are quite vocal aren't they - hope he doesn't start howling

Wags · 10/04/2007 10:20

PS congrats on human baby

cupcakes · 10/04/2007 10:26

ooh congratulations! I found out I was pg with no 3 when our dog was 6 months old.

yes look at her bits if they are starting to swell then yep

sniff · 10/04/2007 10:35

you have to keep them apart even when bleeding stops I made the mistake of blieving jet wasnt in season after the bleeding had stopped how wrong was I

Took her to the park for a walk and had 4 dogs barking round my feet

Wags · 10/04/2007 10:39

The blood will get more watery and will start to become more of a straw colour. This is usually when they are most fertile and the bitch will be receptive to the dogs advances. With my bitch that has always been about 2 weeks from when the bleeding starts but obviously they are all different!

Dear God MellowMa, please tell me the dressing gown stayed done up whilst frantic tea-towel shaking was going on

Nbg · 10/04/2007 10:56

We have a crate so we can keep them apart. Its ok in the day as I'm aways about its just at night. I'll have to put Freya in because Oli will howl all night.
I havent seen any blod yet though. She just keeps snapping at him

Where we used to live, he could pick up when the neighbours Dalmation was on heat.

Its the beagle thing.. that nose can get them in all sorts of trouble!

Nbg · 10/04/2007 11:00

He's a bloomin nightmare with sniffing. His nose doesnt come up off the ground when he goes out.
