What to do about neighbour's dog (if anything)

Neighbours have a Weimeraner, around 12-18 months old. It doesn't appear to have been socialised, rarely gets walked, howls, squeals and jumps at the back door as soon as it's let outside for wees and then is yelled at when it's let back in (we can hear this through the paper thin walls).

A while ago, neighbours were at hospital all the time - one was inpatient and the other visiting - dog was left alone for 3 days with people popping in to feed and let out. We offered to have the dog for them to help - mainly because we could hear the dog's distress and it ripping the house to shreds - and we were told 'the dog is wild, you wouldn't want her'.

For the last few days DH and I have had suspicions that the dog is alone again. Both neighbours cars aren't there and haven't been for a week, two strange cars on the drive but no one around. Bedroom light is constantly on, day and night.
We know that the dog has been let outside 3 times a day as we hear her clawing the back door and yowling but have never seen anyone coming or going.

Tonight, we heard howling so went to nosey out of an upstairs window and our suspicions have been confirmed. They have got someone coming in 3 times a day to let the dog out and probably feed her.

It's made me feel so sad for the poor dog. It seems like she's got major separation anxiety issues just from being put outside to wee and now she's been pretty much alone for over a week, bar the 3 times a day visits.

Now my question is, what do we do? Do we do anything?

Can we report this to RSPCA or someone similar? Technically she's not being physically neglected as she's being let out, having food etc (we assume). But psychologically it's not right surely?

Would the RSPCA even care or have resources to investigate this?
Any opinions gladly received, even if it is to say stop being a nosey twat and mind my own business!

Poor dog

Unfortunately RSPCA will not care. The dog is being fed and watered and has shelter. In their eyes that's enough

You actually have time to sit there and watch the house.... honestly OP. Just leave it.

GuntyMcGee · 02/10/2017 22:36

Not that we have time to watch the house at all, just noticed things when going in and out. Yes tonight I watched to see if there was anyone about, briefly, for all of 5 minutes as I got ready for bed.

I just feel so shit for the dog, stuck in the house alone day and night.

MsMommie how can you say that? This is a caring person worried about an animal that is not receiving the full care that it should. Do you never look around you and see what is going on? If you have nothing helpful or nice to say then you shouldn't have posted anything.

Msmommie some people empathise and care for animals

Op I would struggle to ignore

SuperBeagle · 02/10/2017 22:43

The RSPCA are utterly useless in my experience. We reported our neighbour's dog 3 times for having no shelter during storms that caused major flooding in our area. They did nothing about it.

Thankyou for your replies, the whole situation has bothered me for ages as the dog seems like an inconvenience to the neighbours from what I've heard and seen when I'm home. Of course I don't know what's really going on because I'm not actually standing staring in at their windows!

There just doesn't seem to have been any time or training put in and then the dog gets the blame for 'bad' behaviour and barking when it's not it's fault.

I'm finding it hard to ignore the fact that they've obviously gone away and left the dog on its own but don't think there is anything I can do about it.

Can you find out if there is a local weimerana rescue? They are usually really good at getting involved (local breed specific rescues) as opposed to the RSPCA. I wouldn't be able to let it go like that either.

JaneEyre70 · 03/10/2017 07:35

I would report it to the RSPCA so that it is on file, and hopefully the owners would be contacted to say a report has been made. That way, your conscience is clear. Our neighbours leave a big dog from 8am to at least 7pm every day, and it's never properly walked. I can hear it barking in distress and it breaks my heart. I've offered time and time again to walk it with mine, and have told them about the barking but they don't care. I think not walking a dog is beyond cruel, especially a Weimeraner. They're hounds ffs, not lap dogs Angry.

I would report to the RSPCA as my neighbours had a dog which was locked in an outside shed and just let out for food/drink and the occasional wee and they took it off them.

HmmHmm

The dogs needs are being met but only just. Company and socialisation aren't being met, dogs need company. Keep a diary of it all and phone the rspca. Even if they do nothing your conscience will be clear that you did the best you can.

Quick update:

It's been over a week now and it sounds like the dog has been going mental in the house.

I sent a form to rspca online and they've replied stating that because someone is coming to the house at least once every 24 hours the neighbours aren't in breach of the animal welfare act and they will not investigate further.

I've been advised to monitor the situation and try to get a visual on the dog to see if she's being fed and isn't injured and if I have any concerns about her physical stays then to contact them again.

Can't say that I'm impressed but I do understand that they've got to prioritise the worst cases and this one isn't bad enough to warrant further investigation.
