One of our guinea pigs died today, can we get another one to keep the living one company?

or will one of them eat the other?

We are worried that Martha will be really lonely, can we get a companion for her?

Also, I am worried that the first one died of an infection, but she wasn't ill yesterday (i found her dead in the cage this morning) - do guinea pigs often just drop dead?

(I am being flippant, but it was very upsetting - for me anyway - dd1 just wants a new one )

hi,

Guinea pigs can deteriate very quickly - they can seem fine one minute then have a fit and die!

female guinea pigs usually accept a new female companion without any problems.

Hope this helps

yes thanks. I couldn't find our guinea pig books today to check this. I am worried that the other guinea pig will pine for her sister.

We had two guinea pigs who were brothers and one died. The remaining one accepted a new friend without any trouble. We introduced them on neutral ground before we put them in the hutch together, don't know if that made a difference.

we keep guinea pigs and female do seem to accept another female very easily . guinea pigs can get a bit lonely on their own so it nice for them to have a little furry friend

We've never had a problem introducing a new baby piggy with an existing adult eithr Males or females. Think the adult knows they are a baby are acts as a surrogate parent (well all mine have anyway). Introducing two adults can be difficult so easier to stick to putting in a young 'un.
