My cat is 2.4 years old, in November 2005 he started to pee blood and was diagnosed with an urine infection. We took out pet insurance in december 2005 when he was got very ill and cost me over £200 (something difference) in feb and march 2006 he had two more urine infections which was when the vet diagnosed him with FLUTD. He has had another attack this week, and he might need to go back to the vet before tuesday (when they reopen) but I don't know if the insurance will cover it, as he had the first attack in 2005 before we took out insurance. But the emergancy vet want £100 just to see him, without the consultion fee and then the swabs, bloods and anything they will need to do.

My own vet thinks that because he wasn't diagnosed after the first time, but only after the third attack, that they might pay. If he starts peeing properably before tuesday, do you think I should send the bill to my insurance compancy and see if they will pay for the injections he had on wednesday? If they do, then I know that these attacks will be covered in future. The vet does want to do investigations but they cost over £500, and as the cat hasn't had an attack for a year (except for the one this week) he is reluctute (sp??) to put my cat through it.

We do have a PDSA hospital about 13 miles away, but we don't live in the catchment area. I am thinking about just driving there and seeing if they will see him, but I think they might turn me away.

IF the cat get blocked I know it can kill within 24 hours, and atm he is peeing slightly, but with a slight red tinge, which happened before. The drugs he was given on wednesday take 5 days to work, which is horrible waiting for to kick in.

Sorry this is so long.

what is the insurance company?

SparklyGothKat · 07/04/2007 23:47

tescos. I don't know if they will pay for it as he had the first bout before we took the insurance out, though he was only diagnosed after we took the insurance. My vet went through his notes and there is no mention of FLUTD until april 2006

dp sadly thinks they may not pay as the symptoms started before the insurance was taken out...

thinks £500 sounds huge

he thinks its either 'idiopathic cystitis' or
crystals in urine

should cost £25 to tell which of these it is...

SparklyGothKat · 08/04/2007 00:08

He has had 2 injections this week on wednesday as soon as I noticed that he was visiting the tray every minute and only producing drops. He is still doing small amounts, slightly more than that on wed, but with a red tinge. I am on benifits but have insurance (which I was very glad to have when he was shot last year) Does your DH (take it he is vet ) think that I will be ok to wait till my normal vets reopen on tuesday morning? I ov. don't have £100+ to take him to the emergancy vet.

if some urine is passing its ok
the worry is if he gets a blockage ..it IS an emergency..
is that any help?
dp says make him drink loads = add water to his wet food
stop all dry food
put loads of water about house for him

SparklyGothKat · 08/04/2007 00:19

have been giving him water with a syrine, as he isn't a big drinker. Have been giving wet food. So even though he isn't producing a lot of urine, its ok? He keeps peeing is strange places atm, which is because he is thinking the tray is causing pain, yes? have put paper down, so he can pee on that, rather than the tray (plus its easier to see how much he is producing)
He has cost me so much for a £5 moggy love him to bits though

good idea - the paper!
dp nipped out so will get his comments in a sec on amounts of wee!

SparklyGothKat · 08/04/2007 00:27

Thank you so much GABO, even though this is his 4th attack, I still panic when I see the red wee.....

BTW do you think the PDSA would turn us away if we turned up at the hospital 13 miles away?

GreenandBlackOtter · 08/04/2007 00:34

as long as its frequent bits of wee its ok

dp says give it a try - they should do - sometimes they may help pay vets fees but it depends what benefits you are on,,,hth!

GreenandBlackOtter, how are things with your DS? Have been on holiday but wondering about you both

SparklyGothKat · 08/04/2007 00:37

I can get help with vets bill from the PDSA, as I don't live in the catchment, but they will only cover £100 and if I have to go to the emergency vet, they want the money up front, which will be over £100. Hopefully he will start peeing properably tomorrow....

SparklyGothKat · 08/04/2007 00:38

He cost me £46 the other day for the injections he always get ill over the holidays.....

ceolas · 08/04/2007 00:51

oh glad to hear it.

(sorry for hijack SGK)

SparklyGothKat · 08/04/2007 00:56

Thanks you so much GABO and DP you have put my mind at rest. I phoned the emergancy vet earlier (at the royal vets college) and he started waffling on about lots of things it could be, which didn;t help me. All I wanted to know was if I should panic while he is peeing small amounts...

hi psarkly, try the website
all about fleine lower unrinary tract problems

i think it will be hard to get the insurance company to pay, as this site says , it often becomes an intermittent thing...
but gopod luck, and if the cat vomits, or really isn't passing much uirne , get him seen.
htht and good luck

mrsjohnsimnelcake · 09/04/2007 12:20

i suppose the vet would be looking for stones, and this will need your cat to have an anaestheic and some xrays... so this may be part of the £500 ... i know you have n't had alot of joy with cats recently.

SparklyGothKat · 09/04/2007 23:09

Its the same cat every time MrsJ He is still peeing small amounts, but I am not happy so will be back at the vet tomorrow morning.
