Lost of puppy after she ate something toxic

Hello,

We lost our lovely puppy yesterday.
She ate something that was toxic and sadly passed away.

Up to now we do not know what she ate. The vets did all the blood tests, Ultrasound and it came back as negative and showing nothing. The vet has said in her opinion it is more than likely something she ate although she could not rule out cancer either.

We have been racking our brains and trying to retrace the day and hours before she started vomiting and can not think of anything that she could have eaten.

I am so devastated, we had her for a very short time (5 weeks) but she had such an huge place in our heart.

I know this may come across as harsh but I want to get another puppy. The house feels so empty without her, the garden is just quiet. I miss her and having a little bundle of joy in our lives. She brought so much happiness to our home. We really just started taking her out for walks and she was the perfect addition to our family. We dedicated so much time and energy to her. I know 5 weeks was a short time but she just made such a huge positive impact on mine and kids lives.

Is it too soon to get another puppy?

I am so sorry OP Flowers. There is no right or wrong time to get another puppy as that is a personal decision.

** She was only 3.5 months old. And I am not trying to replace her. She will always have a special place in my heart ♥

So sorry op. If getting another puppy is right for you, then it's right.

However I would try and find out what happened if you can, just in case there's a toxic plant or something in your garden that you can get rid of before bringing a new puppy home

BiteyShark · 28/08/2017 10:20

My puppy would eat anything and everything including stones. We have a few toxic plants in our garden but fortunately whilst he will eat grass he hasn't shown any interest in munching on them. Have a quick google to see if you have anything that might be toxic as BellaGoth mentioned. However, it might have been just one of those things that you will never get to the bottom of Flowers

Oh so sorry for you OP. Losing a pet can be very hard, especially since they are seen as 'replaceable' when they are not. Flowers

I know how you feel- there is a puppy-shaped hole everywhere you go in the house isn't there?

We lost our ddog1 unexpectedly and we got current ddog2 6 weeks later. When I met ddog2 for the first time about 4 weeks after ddog1 had died, DH said it was the first time he'd seen me smile since it happened. For us getting another dog very soon was the right thing to do.

OP I'm so sorry to read you've lost such a young fur baby. Many condolences. I know as a dog owner how much a part of the family they are from day one.

I would try and get further accuracy on cause of death just to rule out a repeat incident with something toxic in the home or nearby.

If you want a new puppy then don't overanalyse it, just make sure you are doing it for reasons that feel right to your family and circumstances. People either get another dog straight away or often take a very long time to recover enough to replace the loved pet, if ever. No right or wrong way. It doesn't mean you loved her any less or that you are disrespectful.

So sorry to hear about your little pup.
We were literally panicking yesterday, after our new puppy seemed to find and eat one cherry laurel berry and so today, we are chopping the lot down!
We had been around puppy proofing the garden fencing etc but hadn't even noticed the laurel.
He is picking up gravel as well so having to carefullly watch.

Dogstrust have a pretty comprehensive list of poisonous/toxic plants and leaves which might be helpful if you choose a new puppy.

My friend also lost his puppy last week. They think she'd eaten some chewing gum from the pavement as it looked like xylitol poisoning. Awful. So sorry. Flowers

So sorry for your loss Flowers

So sorry Flowers

So sorry that's awful - mine is 10 months now but has had 2 emergency vet visits eating grapes and tablets; he eats everything from cotton wool to brick Sad - yes of course you can get another puppy if you are still confident you can give it the huge amount of attention they need, maybe plan when would be a good time for you.

I always get mine when there is a school holiday coming up so we all stay in and concentrate on the dog. I work from home so dogs are rarely alone in any case. Depends how old your kids are and whether they'd be a help or a hinderance! Its a horrible thing to lose a pet, many of us here understand. Don't forget to post on the doghouse thread for support too.

I'm so sorry Flowers

Puppies are nightmares for this in the first few months. My previous dog was rushed to the vets twice as a puppy, once for finding grapes at the bottom of a shopping bag my DM put on the floor and once for breaking into my handbag and playing with a card of nurofen. My current puppy, now 8 months, was rushed to the vet aged 9 weeks when a bloody mouse dragged one of the mouse/rat poison sachets in the locked attic down through the wall cavity, out behind the washing machine and onto the kitchen floor where the puppy found it before we did. Thank God, he didn't ingest any, but we could so easily have lost him. He's been a little dustbin for gravel, bits of plant, any foreign object he can get his little gob around... it's a nightmare until they grow out of it, even when you don't take your eyes off them they still manage to find some things. A friend lost her 5 month old when it shot between her legs out of the front door and straight under a car.

I'm so sorry you and your baby were so unlucky. There is no right or wrong grieving time to get another dog, you're not replacing, that can't be done. I lost my last dog to illness that came suddenly and out of the blue aged 4 years, and went in 36 hours from 'I'll never have another dog' to being unable to stand the massive hole she left in the house. I still miss her like hell, but love my maniac puppy dearly.

Thanks everyone for your message of support and advice. We are going through the garden to see if we have any toxic plants

Vet did mention that mushrooms are very toxic too. Poor baby, we called her a hoover as she would put everything in her mouth.

I am amazed that the vet can't tell if it was something toxic or cancer. Please don't beat yourself up about it. If you want a new puppy then get one

jellycat1 · 28/08/2017 18:41

The exact same thing happened to my parents when they'd had their dog around 6 months. They were devastated. Still are really. They will never know for sure what happened but they suspected round-up as they'd been for a walk over some fields. They got another dog and it helped them I think.
