Cat is 5 months old and uses litter tray.
We have just started letting him out but he comes back in to use his litter tray
I have tried taking tray away but he used ds bed instead Sad

Help!

You can't really move on from a litter tray when you have a cat. They should always have one available even if they go outside a lot.

You could try putting some used litter in your garden to see if that encourages him, but he'll probably just stay in and piss on your floor when it's raining!

I had cats growing up and they never had litter trays once they were going outside.

Can you move the tray next to the door/cat flap and then outside?

I've had cats before and they have never had litter trays, they just go outside.

Tray is currently near door, I will move it outside and see what happens

If you add some earth to the litter tray to get them used to using it. If you don't have a cat flap then you will still need a tray inside regardless but they may get more used to earth

It's only 5 months old... is it neutered yet?

Racmactac · 06/08/2017 09:12

Yes he's neutered

It really is a bad idea to get rid of a tray completely. What happens when the weather is awful or when fireworks are going off every weekend between bonfire night and new year? You risk having a very stressed out cat.

Orangebird69 · 06/08/2017 09:29

Assuming you keep him in at night, what will he use for a toilet if you don't have a tray?

Racmactac · 06/08/2017 09:42

Well presumably he will just go out through cat flap and go to toilet outside.

Unfortunately I think it's in some cats nature to just use the tray. I had a cat that was locked outside all day once as we didn't have a cat flap, as soon as I came home he rushed in to use the tray. Sometimes they just take more time to get used to being outdoor cats

Orangebird69 · 06/08/2017 10:42

So you don't keep him in a night then... maybe he's just too young or insecure to go to the toilet outside yet.
