Any tips for a flea problem, can't seem to get rid!!

We've had fleas for a few weeks now (probably going on a month or so) and nothing we do seems to get rid of them. Our cat is an indoor cat so we've no idea how we managed to get them in he first place.
We have been treating the cat with frontline advanced plus and have used three different flea sprays on the flat, two different types of bug bombs and a powder, I thought we'd cracked it but my son woke up today with yet more bites (which we had originally thought were chicken pox) and I found a flea last night although it was dead and I found one this morning. Normally I find up to ten a day but we have been away for a few days and used that as an opportunity to spray the whole flat again.
Could this be just them going a bit mad before they disappear for good or could we still have a problem? I've emailed a few pest control places to get quotes for professional treatment but in the meantime are there any really good treatments out there that I could try?

I had the exact same problem last year when we had a stray cat come to live with us, I tried everything and my daughter was constantly coveted in flea bites. What eventually worked for us was buying Advantage flea spot on and a can of indorex on Amazon. Worked brilliantly combined and no more flea bites.

Knew it would be cat fleas. They are the worst to get rid of.

Have you been getting all this stuff from the vet? Or just from shops?

If from shops, go to your vet, they will probably wash your cat in a flea treatment, and give you some spray for you house, you have to spray every inch, move furniture, wash materials, clothes bed sheets ect.

If you have got treatment from the vet already, then I think you will have to pay for professionals.

As a pp said, advantage for the cat and Indorex for the house. Really thorough hoovering and immediate emptying of the hoover in an outside bin. Washing everything that can be washed. Once the cat has been treated with something that works they are walking death traps for fleas too!

midlifecrash · 22/07/2017 09:21

Advantage/ Stronghold plus Indorex should deal with the live ones, to kill off eggs the best thing I have found is steam cleaning - carpets, skirting boards, any floor cracks, soft furniture. Then hoover like mad. And wash bedding etc on high.

DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING FROM BOB MARTIN (seriously, that stuff can make cats very unwell!)

I had an awful flea problem last year. Powder worked for us in the end, as we have floorboards and I don't think indorex was getting into the cracks.

Also, very regular hoovering, hot washing all bedding/soft furnishings that you can, or else giving them a spell in the freezer.

We had rentokill in, but were totally ineffective :( Never knew how resiliant fless could be until last year!

Thank you, I will order some indorex today the treatment for the cat is supposed to be really good but I think we will try a different one. The sprays so far have been from pets at home, we've used strikeback and the johnsons 4fleas spray and the rip spray. The forgers we've used are the johnsons ones and strike back ones. Hopefully the indorex will arrive quickly and will work!

Definitely won't buy any bob Martin! Thank you for the tip. I'm going to wash all our clothes and spray the drawers and cupboards etc I think. I've already washed all the soft toys and furnishings we have but I think we wil, do it again!!

lots of sympathy, we re having the same problem. Also indoor cats, although I think we have rats on the estate.

We are just trying anything and everything, tbh. every now and then we seem to be getting the upper hand, temporarily.

advantage spot on, from the vet, and every type of spray we can find from hardware shops

its very disheartening

Silverdream · 22/07/2017 09:52

Get the flea treatment from a vets as they kill the entire cycle. Treatments from pets at home only kill the fleas not the eggs. Also buy a house spray from the vets. I had this recently and my problem was I bought the stuff from a pet shop. Also was at 40 all loose covers and hoover cracks in skirting , under fridges etc they will lay eggs in dark places that can lay dormant for 10 years apparently- my house never looked so clean after I was getting rid of them.

ShowOfHands · 22/07/2017 09:57

Frontline hasn't worked for years. Do a search on here for it. People have been saying it for at least 4 years.

SleepFreeZone · 22/07/2017 10:02

Poor you. I think I'd get rid of the cat! 😬

RocketPockets · 22/07/2017 10:02

DS is going to my mums tomorrow and DH and I are going to absolutely gut our flat. Going to go into the vets today and get some decent spray and flea treatment as well.
I didn't know that about frontline! Will ask for something different, thank you Smile

You need advocate from the vets, be very careful with indorex, you can't keep the cat in the room while you spray it.

It's toxic stuff. Very effective.

I'd put the cat in a seperate room, spray everywhere else and then swap over when it's safe for the cat to come out.

Thirtyrock39 · 22/07/2017 10:05

My parents get their cat injected with something At the vets which means any fleas are immiediately infertile and they're the only cat owners I know who have never had problems with fleas
They get it done twice a year

TroubleinDaFamily · 22/07/2017 10:06

Order Indorex from Amazon not from the vet, there is a £10 difference between Amazon and our vet. Thieving gits.

TroubleinDaFamily · 22/07/2017 10:09

We have a dog and have never had a flea problem but every year as we walk out the door to go on holidays I empty a can of Indorex into the skirting boards and soft furnishings.

Maybe that is why we don't have a flea problem or maybe we are just lucky, either way it works a treat.

SALT! It dehydrates and kills fleas and eggs.We had a problem with cat fleas in the house- the children were being bitten and i was mortified at the thought of having guests stay!
I googled it and tried it- marvellous! I got loads of cheap table salt and sprinkled it on sofas, carpets, mattresses etc and left it for the day. Hoovered after 8ish hours and have not had a problem since! Magic stuff!

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/07/2017 10:22

The flea injection prevents infestations but won't kill fleas.

Orangebird69 · 22/07/2017 10:38

Indorex everything. Vacuum daily for a couple of weeks. And advantage/stronghold or similar for flea drops. Front line is rubbish.

JPerrin0506 · 23/02/2022 14:19

Weeks with flea issue
Dogs treated by vet and kept in one room last three weeks
Indirect everywhere in house
Room there in vacuuming constantly but still seeing fleas in their bed, combing figs no fleas coming off
At wits end
Moving house in 3 weeks and can’t leave like this
Any idea pleaseee
