Think dh is allergic to our kitten

Well she's been home a week and she's the most adorable little thing, we all love her but dh can't stop sneezing and getting bunged up when he's near her. He's had to start using his inhalers again too. It's definitely the kitten because when he's out of the house he clears up. It stsrt d the day she came home.

Please tell me this will pass, it's just getting used to her. We had a cat before and he was fine with her.

While medical treatment can help control cat allergies, the best approach is simple: avoid cats and their dander. Limit exposure to the cat. Don't allow your cat to roam free. Keep the cat out of your bedroom at all times. Cat dander gets everywhere. So you need to sweep and mop the floors, vacuum the rugs, and clean furniture regularly. Especially if your son is on inhalers, give him 100% care and attention rather than the kitten as the symptoms can come up time to time or even get worse later if not looked taken precautions.

It's the OPs husband who is allergic to the cat, not her son.

What does your DH want to do OP? I'm allergic to cats. For about a year, I lived with my in laws who had one. I had no choice but to live there at the time and I did get somewhat used to the cat after a while. By that I mean that it did not trigger my asthma in the same way it did initially and I was able to live there without my nose and eyes constantly streaming.

But I was always aware of the cat in the household. And although I didn't wheeze constantly, my physical symptoms never entirely went away. I wouldn't live in a household with a cat again if I had a choice because I was always somewhat uncomfortable. Good cleaning will help but it will not solve the problem.

It's not going to go away. I'm mildly allergic to my dogs, I get hives if I don't wash my hands after stroking them rather than breathing problems just having them in the house. Had one of them 9 years and shows no sign of improving.

Good advice there re controlling contact. Other than that I don't know what to suggest. Just don't think it will magically get better. Sorry.

Thank you for replying. He has seems to have got clearer over the weekend. We had cat who died at Christmas and he was fine with her. I am cleaning lots and keeping her out of our bedroom.

Hoover regularly and brush her fur every day to reduce her shedding. Your DH will more than likely get used to it. In the mean time can he take anti histamines? If this is going to be a problem it's better to regime her while she is still a kitten as it's harder to find a home for older cats Sad

*rehome

it's not going to go away.
sorry, op, you need to rehome your pet.

allergic asthma can turn life threatening, just like 'normal' asthma.

You could try petal cleanse which you put on the coat of cat.
Is he taking antihistamines?
My dd is allergic and when we looked after a cat I bought a Vax air purifier from argos.

YellowLawn · 24/07/2017 07:25

anti histamines don't work well for allergic asthma.
plus taking medicines (which can have unpleasant side effects) for an allergy that can be avoided is unfair on everyone.
