Should i warn breeder about unsuitable new home for puppy

One of my grandsons ,who has mental health issues, is getting a puppy,
He lives in a warden controlled flat
He has been in hospital through having seizures through drink and legal highs
I really dont want to see this dog go to him, he has friends who drink and take drugs,so if he was ill again he says they would look after it
I am not even sure the Housing Association would allow it, as the flat itself has been wrecked in the past, mainly by his friends
I feel disloyal to him in a way,,but more worriede for the puppy, which might lose his temper with, as he did with a budgie he hot and killed
Also in the past he has gone hunting with these so called friends and i know animals have suffered,he seems to think its different because they were wild animals
I have talked to him about getting this puppy, and tried to disuadehim,
His social worker, knows about the budgie and i wondered if i should talk to her if i can find out who she is
Also he says he intends using it for breeding
I know this is terrible, hes my grandson and i am ashamed to say that, but he not fit to have pets
Please tell me what you think,

I would definitely try to prevent this happening if I could, he doesn't sound like a fit person to have a dog especially if there's a chance he could get angry and kill it

Ginger782 · 19/07/2017 07:08

Yes. Though he'll just get another dog from somewhere else? Not sure how you can keep preventing it unfortunately.

KoalaDownUnder · 19/07/2017 07:10

Of course you should warn the breeder!!

Veterinari · 19/07/2017 07:10

Please do report it to the breeder, his social worker and to the HA warden. Hopefully they can work together to make it clear to him he cannot have a pet

FluffyWhiteTowels · 19/07/2017 07:11

Definitely tell the breeder. Ask the HA. Horrible situation for you. Sounds like he's only thinking of it as a means for money i.e. Breeding himself from it. Doesn't sound like he wants a pet to nurture and befriend. Sometimes pets help enormously with MH issues but from what you say I fear not in this case.

Viviene · 19/07/2017 07:11

You are trying to do the right thing, he shouldn't have a pet.

I am trying to find where he found the advert for it, he said on facebook, but i cant find any ads on there
I am going to search the sales sights,
Also intend to ring the housing association when they open,
I dont know where to find his case worker though,
I knpw if he doesnt get this puppy,he will try for another, but the poor little thing will be only 9 weeks old,its not ready for another 5 weeks apparently
I do know its coming from another close by town,so thats a start
Hopefully the Housing Association will say no pets allowed, or if he did get the pup, he might have to get rid of it

Absolutely warn the breeder and phone the housing association and his case worker.

My family used to breed when I was growing up, there's no way in hell we would have wanted one of our pups going into that situation but my parents did home checks so wouldn't have allowed a dog (large breed) to go to a flat.

Like you say, he's your grandson but some people should just not have animals and it sounds like he is one of them.

lovemycatsanddog · 21/07/2017 11:16

I couldnt find any ads for Jack Russells even on other websites, but i have spoken to the person from the HA and explained,
They are allowed to have pets, but in this case they will pass the info onto his case worker, who i think knows about the budgie
I said i dont like doing this but i would never forgive myself if anything happened to the little pup,and i had kept quiet
The lady from the HA said they will of course not bring me into it,
I am sure my grandson will tell the case worker anyway that he is intending getting this puppy,so they will take it from there
Sometimes he has blackouts and cant remember anything,
He has just come out of hospital after having 2 seizures, and been detoxed
I am really annoyed that he gets ESA and blows his money on trainers etc, for £150, when there are people who are not getting any help, and struggling, people who are alcoholics and druggies get everything paid for and abuse the system,

lovemycatsanddog Thank you for doing the right thing. Grandson or not, it sounds like his treatment of animals is seriously concerning and he should not be near them at all. I'm sure he has good qualities, but also some serious issues and it's great to see you've recognised that.

Do you think you could discuss it with him and bring him round to seeing how unsuitable he would be as an owner? Make sure he doesn't end up hiding any new pets from you though- and if you hear of any perhaps you could get the case worker's details?
