My cat-a question

My female cat is nearly two,and i havent yet got her spayed (yes i know....)

looking out the window the other day,i saw my cat 'at it' in the garden with this big black cat.so will she definitely be pregnant?i feel a bit stupid actually,i did take her to the vets when we first got her,but i couldnt afford it at the time, and havent been back since.i dont think i want her to have kittens, its not a very good time right now for that to be happening as well.

any ideas about the options,anyone?

If she is pregnant there's not alot you can do about it. If she is you could sell the kittens and the money could go to spayed your cat. Sorry not much help.

Aloveheart · 24/03/2007 22:34

afew weeks time she'll start to get big, and eat more and perhaps not go out as much. I have just had 4 kittens. I don't think there is anything you can do if she is but i might be wrong.

mrsjohnsim · 24/03/2007 22:39

You can definitely have her spayed as soon as possible.
They can take the uterus away with the foetuses in it.
So no kittens and no more seasons.
If you have a look around the cats protection league may have voucherd for your area, or there may be a local group that help with the costs.
It is the best thing to do, as if she ends up having trouble givong birth (not that common I must admit) then it will cost alot more than the price of just a spay tbh..
HTH and it may be that she doesn;t get preg this time, but net time and the time after she may well be.

mrsjohnsim · 24/03/2007 22:40

Just to add, Aloveheart, you are wrong! And it is not that hard to spay a pregnant cat, the earlier the better.

scorpio1 · 24/03/2007 22:42

thankyou

i feel very silly and a bit sad that i may have to do that to her

thanks again

It is the best thng,
there are enough kittens in the world and she really doesn't need to have any, honest!

scorpio1 · 24/03/2007 22:53

ive just had a look at the cats protection website, and it looks like i may get help because im a full time student.

i just think its the wrong time for us and my toddler would probably try and eat them anyway

AloveHeart - how did you manage to have kittens?

Aloveheart · 25/03/2007 09:45

well wonders of modern science. lol.

I did say i could be wrong i had never heard of a cat having an abortion. Actually never heard of that at all. Glad someone was obviously more informative than me.

ghosty · 25/03/2007 09:49

at cat abortion.

When I had my cat spayed I told them not to go through with it if they found she was pg on examination ... they always check first apparently.

Aloveheart · 25/03/2007 09:51

I thought that if my cat was preggas then that would be that. Surely they don't neuter them with kittens inside??

ghosty · 25/03/2007 09:52

They can but I think that it is cruel. Sorry but I do.

malaleche · 25/03/2007 11:27

just get her the op, you dont need those kittens in your life just now, i know its sad but....
(i love cats and am presently cat-less for the first time in my life...)

softmusk · 25/03/2007 18:16

my uncle had his cat spayed and the vet told him after she was five weeks pregant at the time but as the vet said he just dealt with it

mrsjohnsim · 25/03/2007 22:59

yep, agree with Ghosty, it isn't very nice.

But sometimes you haev to make decisions that you don't like.
if you are going to be personally responsible for the kittens and make sure they all get good homes and be prepared to take them back if necessary, then all well and good.
But the homing centres are full of cats that need homes. The kittens go asily- it is the 1yr old nondescript cats that don't get rehomed... it is a simple fact of life.
The earlier you do it the better, as the uterus won't be so big and the foetuses will be small.

Life isn't easy and it isn't balck and white all the time...
HTH and i don't want to sound harsh, just supportive if you do choose to have her spayed, and

scorpio1 · 26/03/2007 09:27

i dont think its very nice at all,i am actually very sad and feel very stupid.she is going in next week,i am hoping that that is early enough.mrsjohnsim, you have hit the nail on the head.we dont really want kittens in the house and our lives are in a bit of upheaval at the moment, and i dont want the babies to have a horrid time of it.

Thankyou for your help and support.

if only life were perfect, eh?
Don't feel stupid, hen you have kids there is a list of things to do as long as your arm, and it is very easy to forget something, or just keep ignoring it- i know from bitter experience too
good luck anyway, and ignore anyone that thinks you are bean cruel...let them alk in your shoes for a bit and see if then they ill come to the same decision.

Dan4Han · 26/03/2007 09:49

Hi (aloveheart name change) I think if i had known about that i would have probably got my cat done, kittens are very time consuming and expensive too!! don't feel bad, you ahve to do what you have to do and it's better than letting her have kittens and they get stuck in a rehoming centre tbh. I just had no idea that the vet could do that. HOpe everyone goes well with your cat

Dan4Han · 26/03/2007 09:49

that was meant to say everything not everyone, lol.

tigerschick · 26/03/2007 09:58

It's not nice, I know scorpio, but I think you have made the best decision You wouldn't want them in a re-homing cen and, as someone said earlier, there can be complications for your cat which can be unpleasant and costly! Hope it all goes ok when whe goes in, and remember, she might not even be pg!
