They say strict rest - or a 10 minute lead walk (10 mins? - that's hardly worth getting out of bed for)...but she looks so miserable, bored and thoroughly fed up.

I'm thinking that perhaps the exercise guidelines are so unequivocably strict because they have to cater for Jo-numbskull who might lack common sense and would take Fido for an hour long romp across hill and vale...?

But I am envisaging a very gentle 30 minute ramble on the lead. It would be the equivalent of a little old lady taking a turn down Eastbourne pier as regards general exertion level. My motive isn't to exercise Belle but to give her a change of scenery and something else to sniff

Surely it wouldn't do any harm? would it??

I'd take her if you can be sure she wouldn't turn into a manic imbecile who would go running off and hurt herself.

It's a quiet country road and I will be using a lead - rarely see other dogs along there. I shall take her tomorrow then...Thanks

I wouldn't do it, tbh , and i spay dogs for a living.

The internal stiches are the only things holding the would together inside just now- it takes a little while for it all to knit back together...I would wait another 2-3 days at least.
She may look fine just now, but she won't look so good if the stitches break down and she needs more surgery.

I know it is hard, but do rest her now as your vet says, it won't be for much longer.
It is a big surgery to do and it would eb sad if she needed another anaestheitc etc.

Just curl up at home and have a rest too {smile]

Oppps, will have to have a fist figth with notanotter's dh (again)- did we have one about farm vets vs city vets once (I think we both had different naems then too )

handlemecarefully · 24/03/2007 23:20

Oh

sigh! well thanks for being straight with me. I don't want to do anything to hurt her so I'll hold off then...[disappointed emoticon]

Blimey there's a dilemma - do I / don't I. Split professional opinion - any other vets out there for a casting vote?

OP posts:
mrsjohnsim · 24/03/2007 23:23

Sorry, as with the medical proefssion, doffernet people have different advice, but having worked in various emergency clinics over the past 17yrs, i have seen a fair few wound break downs and it is not much fun to sort out.
So may advice is to rest a little bit more and go with YOUR vet's advice- they did the surgery and they have given you the advice

This comes from a woman whose cat got out of his cage 2 days after major orthopaedic surrgery and he broke the leg that was the good leg- but that is another story

handlemecarefully · 24/03/2007 23:24

OK Mrsjohn...fundamentally I am quite cautious, so I will hold off for a couple more days (eek)

I will be strong, I will!

OP posts:
mrsjohnsim · 24/03/2007 23:25

and can you imagine how mad you would be if you had to go back to your (real vet) and tell him that you asked a random group of imaginary people and one who claimed to be married to a vet said to take her and one who clained to be a vet said dont'...and then you took her.....
they'd commit you!

mrsjohnsim · 24/03/2007 23:26

another guts on the floor crisis averted

dp says in15 years never seen a bitch spay wound open....

mrsjohnsim · 25/03/2007 08:30

Heisvery lucky notan otter.
As i said i've worked as an emeergency vet quite alot, and won't go into the gory detail on here, it isn't appropriate.
In the end, I was just advising HMC to take her own vet's advice - I wouold have thought would be the best thing to do seeing as I personally didn't do or see the surgery, and don't know the dog and the resaons why she was spayed etc.

Anyway, I always feel better to be cautious, boring it maybe, but I suupose that is my nature and I don't like to give professional advice on here as it is all so unseen.
I just felt that it would be better to be cautious here too.

Anyway, I am getting the kids' breakfast and they are yellingat me for more of everything- now why wasn't I more cautious on the not getting pregnant front?

Have a lovely day, HMC and the notanottergang I am not here for a flounce or fight, just for some parenting help and support. When I see obvious vetty type questions I answer them if I feel they really warrent quick answer.
We shall agree to disagree mrnotanotter

Hope the dog is well HMC {grin]

Eeek! and yuck!

I haven't walked her actually since her wound site looks a bit red and irritated. Ideally I would be taking her back to the vets tomorrow to get it checked out..but we are burying FIL tomorrow!

Incidentally I am very relieved that my thread has not been the cause of a fall out between Notanotter and mrsjohnsim

Not yet it hasn't, HMC!
