do female cats who've been spayed still attract toms?

because this afternoon i had four HUGE toms in my garden. i noticed the tabby one in my house a couple of times last week and chased him out, tonight i realised a large black cat wasn't mine when he sprayed over my back porch walls and doors about 5 times in front of me. i threw him out and there were the other three toms, in the garden. none of them mine.

i have cats, male and female but they have all been "done". they make a lot of mess however (hairs, knocking things over) and so i recently fitted a four way locking catflap to limit the amount of time they are spending in the house. my back porch is through the kitchen, and our only toilet is through that..it absolutely stinks of cat spray. i am FED UP with cleaning and cleaning.

any ideas?

You could get a big dog....!!!!!

Yes. My cat seems to go into season 3 or 4 times a year and totally sluts herself all over the neighbourhood.

She attracts 4 or 5 toms each time, who loiter outside our house and spray all around it too.

Its an absolute farkign nightmare.

I have vague recollection its something to do with female cat still having some residual ovarian tissue left that continues to function, and does the hormone thing that makes them wail and behavein a frisky fashion!

GreenandBlackOtter · 22/03/2007 19:18

dp says NO!!! it was quite categorical!

friendlyedjit · 22/03/2007 19:22

Am completely sure one of mine who has been spayed goes into heat, she becomes entirely bonkers periodically(and is bad enough to begin with!). Makes funny phroarrrr noises and we have all sorts of undesirables hanging out in the garden. Toms I hasten to add!

GreenandBlackOtter · 22/03/2007 19:26

dp says go to a vet and have a blood test to see if an ovarian fragment has been left behind - if it has they should opertate free of charge as it is the vets fault

friendlyedjit · 22/03/2007 19:32

So it is possible but not common!?

GreenandBlackOtter · 22/03/2007 19:34

yes - the vet has not done a good spey - but dp never had it happen in 14 years

Washersaurus · 22/03/2007 19:35

I was wondering this myself as we've had a tom cat skulking around at all hours making a nuisance of himself and our female cat was rehomed from RSPCA - I thought they 'did' all cats before they rehomed them?

Mind you my neutered tom cat hasn't been affected by her feminine wiles.....

I would highly recommend 'Wash and Get Off' spray to get rid of spray smell and it should also put them off going there again - my cats HATE it when I have to spray that stuff!

Washersaurus · 22/03/2007 19:37

On 2 occasions I have also thrown cups of cold water over the tom to get rid of him - as after a whole day of that blinking noise I was going up the wall .

TBH we're not really worried, guess it's nigh on impossible for her to become pregnant unless ectopic. We have just accepted this as part of her quirky nature, and its rather endearing at times. I'm sure she'll be hurtling towards a prem menopause with such a small fragment left!

well done to your dp!

nightowl · 23/03/2007 18:56

oh no! thanks so much greenandblack otter but i have four females, cant take them all back for tests! guess i'll just have to wait it out
