Vet thinks dog might have diabetes.

Our dog has to go for a blood test as the vet thinks she might have diabetes. She has been losing weight, and drinks a lot. Presumably, she will have to be on medication forever, if she does have it, which seems likely. Has anyone got any idea how much money we're talking about here? I imagine it's not cheap!

The main cost will be all the initial tests. Prices vary hugely depending where in the country you are. Including blood tests, stabilisation (and possibly hospitalisation, depending on how poorly your dog is), your initial bill could be anywhere around £200. Sorry to be vague, but as i said, prices vary depending on area and also size of dog.
However, of all the illnesses it could be, diabetes will generally cost you a lot less monthly when the dog's regime is sorted. Insulin isn't too pricey, and syringes usually cost pennies each (although you should use a fresh one for each injection). If you keep him on a regular feeding & exercise program (no treats!!) you shouldn't have to do much else.
Ask your vet for an estimate, and that should give you a better idea. Is he insured, cos that would cover almost all the costs?

HTH, and good luck xx

Thanks for that. She is insured, but the premium is quite a lot becaause she's old now. So we have a lot to pay before the insurance will cough up.

She was spayed when she was a pup. We are insured with Petplan, and the excess is £110. I'm in the north west. The blood test she has to have on friday is the very first bit of testing.

Have I answered everything?

My dog is going in to have an operation on Friday to have 2 lumps removed. One they think is just a fatty lump, the other they are not so sure . They have quoted me £330 but she is insured. She will be 9 in April and we have to pay an excess of £50, not too bad. That is with Churchill. I just hope she is ok.
