Getting our Jack Russell tomorrow

We are off to collect a rescue JRT tomorrow- 4 year old Milo who has a crime sheet bigger than his small body. We had to listen to a huge litany of his failings before we were allowed to meet him. He's nipped people, barked, , doesnt like anything new, been aggressive towards other dogs and gotten possessive about his toys. I felt nervous waiting to meet him- and in bounded this friendly happy and affectionate little character who immediately came to us wanting cuddles and play. Anyway here is Milo and we cant wait: www.battersea.org.uk/dogs/little-milo

Wolfie He had his feet under the table from the moment he walked through the front door. Battersea told us he would be terrified and we should keep him on a house lead and not attempt to handle him- Well he raced up the garden path, had a good sniff and explore through the house and garden and within two hours he was sitting between us on the sofa soliciting strokes. He is clever and he is already testing boundaries and who might be a soft touch, but its all good

Love JRT, looks like he will settle in perfect with you and I love the fact you allow him on your sofa Smile

Mine sleeps in our bed and it's a habit you can never really break once started so stay firm on that one!

I have a 7yr old rescue jrt. I have never had one before and was considered as I have cats also. She is the best dog I have ever known.so clever, a proper working dog, but also massively loyal and will follow me everywhere. Will always choose this breed from now on!

He's found his forever home. He clearly knows you are the ones.
Fantastic. Flowers

Glad he's settling in well. He'll probably learn where his space to sleep is in time but in the mean time you could try a barrier. My childminder has one in her open plan downstairs area, not sure whether it's to keep the dogs in or the kids out Grin
It's something like this:

Thanks aw he looks adorable. love jack russells, i wouldnt be without mine.
NormaSmuff · 23/04/2017 09:20

mine is 4 and is aggressive if she is with her ball, but i am confident with her off the lead, she has a Go at other dogs but mostly they are bigger than her and she is showing her dominance.
occasionally she loves other dogs and you do know it when she does.
and she is territorial over the dirty plates in the dishwasher.

ElloDAAAVE · 26/04/2017 10:54

Jack Russells are wonderful...couldn't be without one now.
But there's a reason why some circles lovingly refer to them as "terrierists" 😂
Firm training is a must. And lots of love.
Prepare to be very loved!

Here's my derpy dog...

HI everyone, thanks for all of the advice. \milo is settling in well and really bonding with us (he has two mum's and a grandmum in the house, so that's a lot of bonding to do. He is showing himself to be intelligent, energetic (of course) playful and loving. We are going to start recall training outside the home on Friday- his recall outdoors is an unknown at present. recall indoors is pretty good. Our only real training issue though is his possession over raw hide chews- I gave him a pugs ear and he wouldn't let me take it from him- he was seriously growling and snarling. He also wouldn't yield up a rancid bone he snatched when out on a walk. Any advice anyone>? I haven't had a dog before who would refuse to give me anything. Milo isn't possessive about toys or food generally, its just these super delicious things. Also- he came home with some Pedigree Chum kibble and wet food. I'd like to switch him to a decent kibble- what do you feed your JRTs?

And- he has slept in our bedroom since the first horrendous heart breaking night of seriously awful crying and whining. Now he gets in his bed, which he loves, and sleeps straight through without a murmur. He even likes a bit of a lie in, which is just as well because once he is up and running he is pretty full on most of the day! I am overweight but suspect my waist line will be shrinking soon.

Battersea always send home dogs with pedigree food , I think they get it given to them . I have a Battersea patterdale x jrt and he has Millie's Wolfheart ranger mix and a couple of times a week he has a pouch of natures menu light to make life more interesting .

ChocolateRaisin · 26/04/2017 17:31

He looks gorgeous, glad he has settled in well.

I really wouldn't give him raw hide, it's not good for dogs- bleached and chemically treated and all sorts. Also, if he has a high value item don't try to take it off of him- you are creating a problem that doesn't need to be. If you really need to get something off him, you will need to trade it for an equally high value or higher value item. By taking precious things from him you are teaching him that you take his things from him and aren't to be trusted essentially. The same goes for his food- don't try to put your hand in it/ move it away from him, just let him eat.

I have a nearly 11yr old jrt and 11 month old GSD... Guess which one is better behaved?!

NormaSmuff · 26/04/2017 18:28

i wouldnt give raw hide or bones either, and can understand him not wanting to let go.
