Would neutering stop this behaviour in our dog? Constantly has his nose rammed up our other dogs ass...

Two JRT's

Have had some pretty unpleasant behaviour in one dog Buster. He appears to be dominant, mouting, taking food, toys etc other dog Doodles no probs with this.

We noted that Buster will obsessively eat Doodles poo, vet said tis ok health wise but he'd muzzle the dog until we can pick up the poo to stop him so we do that now.

But now Buster is ramming his muzzled nose so far into Doodles bum all the goddamn time, muzzled or not. Even when Doodles is poohing, the mesh of the muzzle is so close it gets covered in poo as does Doodles bum.

We are having to separate the dogs a lot to give Doodles some peace.
Doodles thrives on the separation, Buster goes mad.

As am I...

I have toyed often with rehoming Buster but feel a responsibility having bought him, if neutering will help then I'm all for it
But we would like to breed from Doodles as his temperament is outstanding and he is a stunning little dog.
I am worried about the hierachy thing if we castrate the dominant one.

I know I should be posting this in a pet talk board.
But on the off chance anyone knows anything about anally obsessed dogs?
GRim I tell you bloody grim

I remember a post from you about Doodles and Buster before. Oooh, this is a tough one. I'm not certain that neutering will stop the behaviour. I have a Golden Retriever who's nearly three, and from a very young age, he would hump anything he could. He was neutered at 6 months, and is still humping for Britain now. Often, neutering doesn't correct these behaviours. However, it is worth having it done, as he sounds like a very dominant dog, and it may improve him generally. I think a lot of the answers will lie in a strict trainig regime though.

JRT's are tough little characters, aren't they? Good luck.

Yep
I am due a new baby in 3 wks, training eeeks my main concern is that it's almost like a form of OCD such is his compulsion, it's not even about mounting as such, he has also chewed a lot of Doodles hair on his back.
doodles does get hacked off with it, if we separate them Doodles is happy.
Will speak to the vet tomorrow...

I'd be inclined to bite the bullet and rehome buster.

You'll have enough on your plate with a new baby to deal with soon.

The stress of it would do my head in!!

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.

Well we've decided to try neutering to see if it reduces the behaviour in any way.
He goes in on Thursday.

If no improvements are forthcoming then I don't see we have any choice - if his life entails being muzzled and separated from the main goings on, his life will be pretty crap too.

I'm sure in a home without other dogs and one on one attention he'd thrive.

You could try putting pineapple in Doodles food, apparently it deters dogs from eating it - must be worth a try! Good luck, no other suggestions though.

LittleB · 05/03/2007 10:14

Sorry that wasn't clear, if a dog has eaten pineapple it makes his pooh unpalatable, so if Doodles eats the pineapple, hopefully Buster won't eat Doodles' pooh.

Doodles is fussy eater/sensitive stomach is on a special vet food.

It's not just the poo eating tbh, it's his harassment of Doodles
He is up his bum so much Doodles actually has lacerations from it.

Poor Doodles! Good Luck Piffle. You sound like you're adopting a sensible approach with this. As you say, if there's no improvement after the neutering, and Buster has to be muzzled all the time, and separated from Doodles, he's not going to have much of a life anyway, so he and Doodles may well be better off separated, and finding Buster a good new home will be you best bet.
