Possibly losing our other dog today - dreading going through it all again with the DS

Our dog has been limping for a couple of weeks now. There was a slight improvement in her a few days ago when she had a steroid injection, but now she's really not too good. She has been on different types of painkillers, and although she is eating and drinking fine, there is no improvement in he roverall condition.DH took her to vets last night as she was struggling to get up. Anyway she is booked in for an x-ray today as vet thinks it is a bone tumour (which the other vet ruled out). If it is a tumour, then she won't be coming back from vets, as there will be nothing they can do.
In the summer we had to get our other dog put down, she was 15, we had her for 12 years and we very upset. The DSes were really upset though and it took DS2 ages to get over it, even now he can't talk about her withour crying. I am dreading having to go through it all again with him so soon.

Oh I really feel for you-it really is like losing one of the family.
No words of wisdom I am afraid wrt DS but wish you all the best.

Novacane · 28/02/2007 10:10

Feel for you salt-

I have just been through it with my childhood cat on Monday (thread: 'it was only a bloody cat')

My DS didnt really know the cat, as it was at my dad's, and he would be too young to understand anyway being 2 3/4's.

It is bad enough coping with it myself, so no words of wisdom, only hugs and understanding, it really is a crappy time.

Heres hoping you doggy comes home ok xxxx

Well - she's back! No tumor, no break, no fracture, nothing on the x-ray. She is still limping, still not a happy dog, but the vet doesn't seem to know what's wrong. Her joint is swollen and very hot, which to me would make me think of arthritis, but it would have shown up on the x-ray apparently.
However she has antibiotics, painkillers and a steriod to take, and has to go back on friday!

I'm so glad its not bone cancer, and it sounds like nothing major - I hope she's better soon.

Novacane · 28/02/2007 13:46

relieved and happy for you salt......

Whoooosh · 28/02/2007 15:53

Oh that's great news-really hope you get to the bottom of it and get more precious time with her.

saltire · 02/03/2007 10:36

Well she had a massive fit this morning, and DH took her to the vets to be put down. Nothing could be done, which we knew anyway, just wish we had found out what was causing the leg problems.
Very upsetting morning, had to shepherd the mindees and Ds1 and 2 upstiars so they wouldn't see the dog having her fit. Mindee 3 is 4 years old and keeps asking what has ahppened, the boys are away to school crying, so had to write letters to school saying why!

Hope your dc's are ok.

Saltire - I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I lost my cat Bratio 4 weeks ago. She was 15 and living with my best friend back in Oz while I'm over here. I cried all weekend but was able to be completely selfish about it as I don't have LO's to have to explain it to.

Can you bury her in your garden and plant a nice tree or bush next to her? I always found that helped me when I was really young and our beloved cats died.

I'm thinking of you and your fam this weekend.

saltire · 02/03/2007 10:42

We rescued her from a farm 12 years ago, they were going to shoot her because she wouldn't work the sheep. She had been very badly treated.
We lost theother dog in the summer through old age, and thought we would have a couple more years with this one. Feel like i have lost a family member

They ARE family and their love and devotion is a very precious part of how a family relate together

Novacane · 03/03/2007 01:05

Salt,

So sorry to hear the news, it's totally and utterly crap isnt it.

Sending love and hugs xxx

alipiggie · 03/03/2007 04:25

Totally understand how you feel as my beloved dog, Jessie has lymphoma and there's nothing we can do for her other than keep her comfortable. She's fading fast at the moment. She was also a rescue dog and my first "baby". Sending you lots of hugs for the boys. There is a wonderful book for children about the death of a dog Dog Heaven Cynthia Rylant , which you might want to look out for.

It is crap Nova, you're right. I will probably feel it more than DH as i work at home as a CM, and previously worked shifts, so was always at home for part/all of the day with the dogs (when we had both), and of course with him being in the military they were great company for me when he was away.
I came downstairs this morning, expecting to see her lying at the bottom, tail waggin waiting to go out.
I will look out for that book Ali, thanks

Hello,

Just wanted to add words of comfort. Our dog had to be put to sleep in january. Retriever aged 10. She had kidney failure. As you'll know, as you have been through it before, its only time that will make things feel slightly more easier, it took me 2 months to be able to look at a picure without getting upset. I wish now that we had had two dogs. Then at least there would not be such an emptyness in the house. At least now we can watch videos of her and remember the times we had with her. My daugher who grew up with her, has managed better than my husband. Who was really devastasted. At least other people understand how you feel. We think that by the summer we will be ready to look for another puppy. So, thats something to look forward to.

anastasia74 · 05/03/2007 19:27

Do you think that you will maybe one day get another one?. At the end of the day, you are either a dog person or not. And without a dog we feel that theres something missing in the house. They are such a big part of the family.
