Goldfish is dead. Oh no it isn't... Oh yes it is...

I thought our goldfish was dying yesterday and this morning it was lying on the bottom motionless. When I went to scoop it out, it started moving again.

I put it in a shallow bowl on its own and it kees stopping, lying on its side and them starting to swim again.

Is it worth persisting or is death inevitable?

I put a capful in and it was so dark you ouldn't see the fish, intensive thearapy, then I dilluted it down. It seems to help the build up of gunk in the tank too. Fish are 8 yrs old and look fantastic.

Methylene Blue

Ceolas - I completely changed the water as well. Mainly because I was sure that the problem was DD's repeated failure to clean the tank and change the filters, not overfeeding.

8 years old? WOW! Worth a try then

We do clean the filter and change about 1/3 of the water every couple of weeks. There seems to be a lot of gunk in the bottom however, amongst the gravel.

gunk check the feeding schedule, who has been feeding and how much?

They have only had one treatment of the blue stuff. I have a freind that swears the yuckier looking the tank the longer they live, but she means green algae on the glass not food gunk on the floor.

I try to get DD to stir up the gravel and net the loosened poo. She hates doing it, surprise, surprise. I take the fish out and keep half the water sometimes, then tip the rest of the water out, and clean the gravel. Seems to cheer them up. A man in work told me there's a very cheap "gravel hoover" type thing that saves you doing it. Must look into it.

Ceolas · 31/01/2007 22:52

AFAIK a pinch daily. Occasionally twice a day if DH lets the kids and I have done it not knowingly.

I shall interrogate them all further tomorrow

Dh claims he put in only a pinch of flakes but his pinch looks more like a flake sick and covers the entire surface , he didn't belive me that that was too much, I had to drag him back and show him the layer of foof gunk on the gravel.

A yes the hoovering syphon thing, be warned very phalic, MIL spotted it in the bucket of fish stuff inthe bathroom and thought her son was trying to enlarge something .

You see what I mean

I meant slick but sick probably describes it better.

Alas, poor goldfish suffered a major relapse yesterday. Lay on its side for about 24hrs swimming the odd stroke every now and then.

Died this afternoon
