Please Help!! The cat has started screaming at us all and we don't know why!

The cat came in as of yesterday, and seemed odd. I assumed it had been fighting outside.
However, then when ever we went near, the cat did this horrendous scream at us.

It's still doing the same this morning. When I crouched on the floor and showed my hand, it did let me stroke it. When I tried to pick the cat up though it meowed really badly. I was wondering if it had been hit by a car or kicked by someone and is now in pain and terrified??!

When we got the cat, we were told it was a boy. He still hasn't got his crown jewels STS and I'm thinking now, maybe he is a she!
Therefore, do you think if it is a girl some tom has tried to jhave his way with her?
The cat keeps lifting its backend up when it's laying down.

Obviously I'll take him/her to the vets later, but right now just want any advice possible!!

If it's a female, she may be on heat. They do make a fearful noise when in this condition and the lifting the back end up is quite typical too.

However, you would probably do best to take he/she to the vet to get confirmation of its gender and to check that it hasn't been injured in any way.

Mumatuks · 31/01/2007 09:30

oh poor girl.
Thanks Freckle.

it does sound like a girl cat

our tom always had visible testicles, even when little.

Mumatuks · 31/01/2007 09:50

Hi again,

Just got back from dropping DS1 off at playgroup.

Having never had a tom cat before, I thought his boy bits would come later as he got older..

I guess we'll have to reconsider the name Buster too!

Do you know if there is anything that would settle her? I've found her in the tree by the house and she screamed at me as soon as I called her name. I'm feeling bad now for not sorting it all out earlier when she was younger.

Oh another question, how long does this heat thing go on for? We're moving on Friday morning, have I any chance of getting her in a box to come with us?

SOunds like she is sore......

Can yo check her claws to see if they are damaged at all?

Or has she gotten fat at all?

Mumatuks · 31/01/2007 09:57

She's not got any fatter, and she's always eaten alot right from the day we got her.

I'm going to make her an appointment for ASAP.

sounds like she's in heat.... they get a bit mad at those times. the female cats i had that went into heat it went on for a week or more but after the first few days they seem to get tired and crabby and don't really go as mad (think they tire themselves out, lol)

geekgrrl · 31/01/2007 09:58

BUSTER!!! PMSL!!!!

lovely for a tom, though!

Mumatuks · 31/01/2007 09:58

Thankyou all for your help.
Very much appreciated.
I'll post back and let you know how we get on at the vets.

You really should get her done if possible.

Mumatuks · 31/01/2007 10:01

Buster was DH's suggestion. He's not a cat fan but he knows I love them and therefore has always let me have them.

When we got the cat it was a tiny kitten. I left him with DH in the car whilst I ran in to Tesco to buy the bowls / food etc.
As I got out the car, he said "what are we going to call you then Buster?" That was it, it stuck. Maybe Boo, short for Boudica. (sp doesn't matter, the cat can't spell )

Ah well at least I have some female company in the house now! I thought I was the only female!

M&S, we will definitely get her done. The last thing I need right now is kittens, and I know it's not good for her either if she does get pregnant, being so young and all that.

You do need to get he/she done. The feline population doesn't need anymore unplanned babies! Good luck with the move. I imagine you will be trying the butter on paws etc

Mumatuks · 31/01/2007 10:08

Yes the butter on paws, I remember my parents doing that for our cat when we moved yonks ago. It worked too!

What doesbutter on paws do?

MrsJohnCusack · 31/01/2007 10:55

my cousins had a female cat called Buster for years - they though s/he was a boy to start with too. They just kept the name, as it's cool

PinkTulips · 31/01/2007 13:19

i had a male cat called Nancy when i was little...... parents didn't have the heart to tell me

suedonim · 31/01/2007 13:45

Aw bless, hope she's okay! How about renaming her 'Brenda'?

We once had a male cat who had allegedly been done...obviously a lie as 'he' later produced a litter of kittens in my sister's bed! My mum was not amused.

nicm · 31/01/2007 14:48

hi it sounds as though the kitten might be in pain, my eldest cat would cry at me if he's in pain. either that or if it is a female she could be in heat. have no personal experience of female cats in heat, but when i read the cat book it said they will go into heat in january and they will wail roll around the floor on their backs, so i got our kitten 'done' in december!! let me know how you get on at the vets

Longlegs1972 · 31/01/2007 15:14

Apparently butter on paws is a distraction technique.

We tried it on our cat when we moved yonks ago, she went back to the old house so many times that the new people adopted her, I was heartbroken.

Well, I was until we got 2 new kittens the following weekend.

Freckle · 31/01/2007 15:56

Butter on the paws is a myth. All it does is give you greasy floors .

paws4thought · 31/01/2007 16:01

mumatuks - how did you get on at the vets?

Mumatuks · 31/01/2007 16:18

There wasn't any appointments for today, so I'm taking her tomorrow!

Poor puss is still cranky as hell, and even screeched at me earlier even though I was a good 3 foot away from her. I've been reading up since, and using what the other Mnetters have said, I'm 100% that she is on heat and not injured as previously thought.

We honestly thought she was a he as that is what we were told when we brought her. I've never had a male cat before, so I thought the testicles would arrive later. How wrong was I?!

Thanks to all of you who contributed to the thread, I was so worried this morning, but at least I know now it is quite normal!

OP posts:
Freckle · 31/01/2007 16:27

Make sure you keep her in. It will (a) make sure she doesn't get pregnant and (b) make it easier to catch her for her appointment tomorrow.

Longlegs1972 · 01/02/2007 13:00

Hows the puddy tat mumatuks?
