OMG I thought my Labrador had broken her leg...

I was on the common earlier, the dogs had come on the school run, and were having a good romp around on the common opposite where we live, so they'd had lots of exercise and were really happy. I met a friend and her collie on the common, and my friend threw a ball, and my dog and hers both dived for it, collided really hard, there was a tangle of legs and fur, and my Bella came away yelping and limping. She was holding her left paw off the ground and it was all floppy! Oh No! I thought, she's broken her leg, it was the wrist area. She limped over to me for some much needed TLC, I had a look at the leg, but didn't want to manipulate it too much, in case I did further harm, and as we were stood there, she slowly lowered it to the ground, put weight on it, and we managed to walk home. It was a seemingly miraculous recovery! Thank God, she seems fine. She's had her breakfast and is chilling out now on her bed. What a fright though. My friend's first words - after sorry, bless her, were "is she insured?" Thankfully, she is. Looks like all will be well though.

I had a scary moment yesterday when my dogs backs paws got stuck down a drain!! She managed to haul herself out and just trotted off. I was panicking but they are more resilient (sp?) than you think aren't they

MummyPenguin · 25/01/2007 10:52

Oh your poor dog! Yes, they are tougher than they look. Bella's got quite delicate paws and slim wrists, although she's a tough nut herself. I accidentally kicked her in the nose yesterday I was swinging my leg up onto a stool and didn't realise how close to me she was. She looked a bit shocked (as you would) but still wagged her tail and jumped all over me for a cuddle.

how's Bella MP? Bracken does stuff like that fairly often (especially if we're out shooting). Seems to be cramp more than anything sometimes.

MummyPenguin · 25/01/2007 22:00

Hi HandyTrinkett. She's fine thanks. Took them out across the common again this afternoon. I wasn't going to take Bella out again today, as I thought perhaps she should rest it, but she clearly wanted to go out, and was absolutely fine. Ran around like a mad thing as usual. I knew she was okay when she snapped at a Spaniel for trying to steal Alfie's (my other dog) stick!!

Do you go shooting round here then? Never seen anyone shoot round these parts. What do you shoot? Don't like it myself, but won't rant at you, i know some people do it.

There's a shoot down near Hurn... ...well actually there's a couple. I beat on it during the season and then the last 2 shoots are for the beaters. To be honest, shooting was not something I was particularly keen on but after beating a couple of seasons and seeing how much more room the birds have I don't have a problem with it. Very, very free range birds! It's good for stocking the freezer and it's a small shoot where everything shot gets taken home and eaten. Pigeon.. ...mmmmmm... ...pigeon... hungry now..

MummyPenguin · 26/01/2007 10:12

Pigeon! yuk! I'll stick with chicken, ta! What's 'beating' then? Only the obvious springs to mind - and I'm sure it's not that!

Just been round the vets for worming tablets. Was the usual carnage in there. Had to wait about 20 mins, perhaps longer (time flies when you just get chatting to other dog owners) It's always so disorganised in there, but they have had three emergency admissions this morning, so I was nice and patient. Can't say the same for an old girl in there who had two dogs the same as mine, funnily enough, she really kicked off at the poor receptionist.

Pigeon is fantastic!! (wood pigeon obviously not the nasty feral things!)

You've reminded me I need to get flea and worming stuff.. ...want to make sure everything is done before baby arrives and things change forever!

beating is basically walking in a big line making a moderate amount of noise to flush birds out in front of the guns. You also use dogs which have to be pretty well trained so they don't go off and chase the birds!

MummyPenguin · 26/01/2007 10:24

Unlike my two Is Bracken good at that sort of thing?

When's the baby due? It's your second, isn't it?

Yep - very pleased with him! Trained him myself from a puppy (bloody hard work)..

Baby is our first and is due on March 11th which is approaching ridiculously quickly..

MummyPenguin · 26/01/2007 10:45

Ahh, good luck with that. Don't forget to let us know what you have. Obviously will 'chat' to you before then, though. You're right, it will come round really quickly now.
