Browny · 23/01/2007 12:11

Hi, I know it might be a long shot, but would anyone happen to have a Hicraft Stop Pull Dog Harness in small please, that they no longer need. My little pup (jack russel x something) is nearly choking itself when we take it out for a walk. Thanks!

Its not a Jack Russel you know

Browny · 23/01/2007 12:23

hiya! , well what do you think she is?

ItsMeMellowma · 23/01/2007 12:28

She is whatever our Snoop is

Bigger than a JR but very similar......wait till her head starts to fill out.... like a wee staffy (kind-of)!!

Dh loves her, he calls her his "Good girl-dog"

How is Sashas eye?

Browny · 23/01/2007 12:31

Yes, I think she looks a lot like your Snoop too, they could have came from the same litter they look so alike!

Sasha's eye is healing great, we took her back for her check-up yesterday and he was very pleased with it, she's got more anti-biotic drops but she's used to me giving them to her now. He said there was a small complication, but nothing to worry about at all - he said that part of the iris was sticking to the inside of the cornea but it wouldn't affect he sight and wasn't painful at all. She's back to her usual mad, running around the house self! .

Just a suggestion but why not train your puppy to walk to heel?

ItsMeMellowma · 23/01/2007 12:36

Aww thats good. Its such a shame when they get ill/unwell... I cannot believe how close/attached I am to Snoop as was never a "dog-person"!!

How is she with the cat now? Our cat sleeps in a basket behind the bathroom door now...as far away from snoop as possible.

I will take a pic of Snoop in the next few days and send it over so you can see how she has changed (again)!!

Take care

Hi, I started to take her to puppy classes, we only managed to go twice when she was attacked by a cat and nearly lost her eye. She is still wearing the collar and at the moment isn't interested in training. As she is a very small dog I find it quite hard to keep her concentrating on a treat I have in my hand without her jumping up for it. Any hints or tips would be gratefully received. .

She still wants to play with the cat and seems so excited when she sees her, the cat on the other hand doesn't want to make friends, so we're constantly making sure the cat isn't in the same room as her and dashing to shut the living room door to make sure she doesn't sneek in.

Did I send you some new photos, I can't remember? Can't wait to see what Snoop looks like now, I can't believe how quick Sasha has grown and changed.

I know what you mean about not being a 'dog person', I've always had cats but I love this little mad thing to bits now .

Have a good day and keep warm, it's freezing here and is starting to snow .

You need to take her to training classes again. Little dogs really do need training still. My dog trainer is just starting classes especially for small dogs. It might be worth looking to see if similar thing where you are.

You need to use high value treats such as small pieces of cheese. Ther are different ways to get them to walk to heel. You could simply stop each time they pull so that eventually they learn that pulling actually doesnt get them anywhere. You have to be consistent though and will look an idiot when out walking.

Another way is to hold her lead in your right hand with her on your let. Keep a treat in your left hand that you keep just in front of her as you walk. Lots of attention when she walks to heel and nothing when she doesnt.

Personally I dont think dogs should be allowed to jump up - bad manners when they do to someone else. Keep treats in your hand down low and never give when jumping or you're teaching them to jump.

Browny · 23/01/2007 13:08

Thanks for your advice. I had signed my puppy up for an 8 week training course, but her eye injury only happened a week ago and at the moment she is unable to attend the classes, due to the high strength anti-biotic tablets and drops causing her to be very sleepy. She is also still wearing the plastic protective collar around her neck, so it's very difficult for her to see what's going on around her.

My trainer has kindly agreed to put her on the next 8 week course when by that time her eye should have healed properly.

I agree with you that jumping up is not acceptable (especially as she has extremely sharp nails) and could knock someone over too. The other owners seem to find it very easy to hold a treat just in front of their dogs noses because they are bigger/taller dogs..... I was told off for bending over so as to hold Sasha's cheese in front of her nose. Oh well, it's a long process I guess .

I have been told so much, its all very confusing.

Snoop is very very excitable when anyone comes to the door, she actually gets over-excited and licks furiously and makes silly little noises!!

I have been advised to ignore her when she comes to me and not to look he in the eye for the first 5 minutes...which we are doing but she is still the same....she also has very sharp nails and the boys do not like it in the morning when she gets excited as she knocks the lo over.

Another thing is she still wees in the kitchen at night....I take her food and water away at 8pm...she still wees on the floor....

Browny · 23/01/2007 13:26

You're not alone, our two sound like twins . Sasha does the excitable licking too and the funny little noises. Our dog trainer told us make a shaker, using something noisy like nuts and bolts in a container and shake it when she jumps up. Reading one of the books I've bought, it tells you just to say, "ah ah"... haha, she's far too excited to take any notice of me saying that! I'll let you know what I've found out in the books I bought the other day from Amazon, when I get around to reading them! .

When you come in you can just turn your back on them and stand still without making a noise until they calm down. Once calm them pet them. Or have a treat ready and get them to do something else like sit as soon as you come in.
ANy attention you give them is a reward for the behaviour.

ItsMeMellowma · 23/01/2007 15:55

Hmm must try that, although I have a feeling we should have started when she was younger as although she does calm down a little more quickly she is still VERY hyper. I have never seen a dog so excitable.

Browny can you let me know which month you posted Sasha pic in as I have looked for 15 mins but have no idea how far through the pictures Sasha is....it puts them up in order of when they were put on the site.

hercules1 · 23/01/2007 15:57

She's hyper like that because it gets the end result - your attention. Never too old to learn.

SparklyGothKat · 23/01/2007 16:05

I had to look up what you wanted and I have one!!! Found it in the drawer yesterday when I was clearing it out. Its not the hi-craft one but is very similar, we used it for our staffy when he was a pup and now he has a huge leather one, so you are welcome to it.

SparklyGothKat · 23/01/2007 16:25

have posted a for you here its on the smallest fit atm, but can be made bigger

Browny · 23/01/2007 23:07
