softmusk, its not usually such a big issue (that you have small children) with cats. With dogs, I think the rescue centres have to be much stricter as dogs are a lot more work - walking etc - which can be difficult with little kids. Many cats are child friendly

what about a retired greyhound about two or three years old they are more or less housetrained, very very gentle and the people at the kennels can advise on which ones are better with children
ps they don't need a lot of exercise in fact are extremely lazy

We had no luck with cats protection, I think the woman they sent to homecheck us had a general fear of toddlers! We ended up at wood green and got our cat from there. However, they would only let our cat go with us because she had a proven track record with small children, and I only took her because she was a 'confident' cat, I felt it was important for the cat to be able to say 'see ya!' to ds and slink off when he got over ambitious!
Also, think the gryehound suggestion is great!! Lovely dogs, we will be looking into rehoming one when ds is a little bit older, although the cat may have other ideas...
Omly other suggestion is to get a kitten from a shelter as it can be difficult to get a suitable cat, we were very lucky! Good luck!
