Havanese
Bichon Frise

Oh ggirl, if it makes you like me again, (or for the first time even!) I wasn't referring to your picture but to the labradoodles. If you read back, you will see I was disputing their existence with lulumama. I am sure your doggies are....well, doggies!

brimfull · 13/01/2007 22:32

I was only playing DG

Standard poodles (the tall ones) if not given poncey haircuts are fab, VQ. Like this one . They are good dogs!

Avoid labradoodles if you don't want moulting. I know a couple and both moult just as much as a lab (and not all breeders are honest enough to make sure buyers realise this possibility - they will usually skirt over it by saying low shedding coats "aren't guaranteed"). It's still early days for the cross so coat type is not at all sorted.

Has anyone mentioned Schnauzers (mini, standard and giant varieties)?

Bear in mind that dogs with non-shedding coats tend to need a fair bit of grooming.

waiting for dp to come up with my brew and will ask him.....

JanH · 13/01/2007 22:57

Bichon frises are yappy little curs btw (she said politely)

NotAnOtter · 13/01/2007 22:58

dp recommends bichon frise, poodle or border terrier.
He says terrier has nice wiry coat and does not shed much...not keen on bichon because have dicky ears = big vet bill!

JanH · 13/01/2007 23:01

What does he say about a standard poodle, NAO?

NotAnOtter · 13/01/2007 23:02

He likes them and they are nice to quote 'still have hairy ears though' I asked for an explanation and was told hairy ears= high vets bills!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/01/2007 23:09

Still dont like em Jan!

Am off to look at border terriers....

My dog has hairy ears, has had an infection once in 12 yrs.I just pull the hairs out when I remember.

NorksBride · 13/01/2007 23:28

MIL has border terrier - the bitches can be quite 'independently minded' ie. she is 2 years into training and still has lousy recall (and MIL is good at training).

On the other hand, have 2 friends with male border/crosses who are aged 2 and 3 and they are really obedient (except with my chickens, but they are terriers I suppose)!!

VoodooBiltong · 13/01/2007 23:29

labradoodles are the famous ones, bred to be seeing dogs for people with fur allergies. get googling for the doodlers!

Joannie2 · 14/01/2007 16:13

Most wire-haired breeds, like terriers and dachies, don't moult. Standard Poodles are superb dogs - sharp as a tack.

As for crosses, like labradoodles, you are just as likely to get one that moults as you are one that doesn't. There are very few reputable people deliberately breeding lab/poodle crosses - most do it so that they can call the pups these stupid names and con people into thinking that they are getting a non-moulting breed. Labradoodles can also have all the genetic problems associated with both parent breeds, hips, elbow, eyes etc.

Remember that if it is allegies you are worried about, most people are actually allergic to dog saliva and dander, not the coat.

i'd say a mini or toy poodle robust dog. we love ours to bits u dont hav to have those funny hair do's we keep ours in a puppy clip he looks like a little black sheep.

they're non shedding, they don't have hair its more like wool, very little dog smell because poodles do not produce dander. ours are the best watch dogs. we used to have rotti's but they'd let every man and their dog on to our property.

Great with kids very sociable and easy to train, excellent temprement. I'd steer clear of the designer dogs such as moodle maltese x poodle, or labradoodles, cavoodles etc because they're crossed with hair shedding dogs the chances are highly likely you'll end up with this huge woolly shedding dog.
