Query on pet insurance - dog - is she a cross breed or pedigree ?- 50/50!

I was going to get a quote for pet insurance, but not sure what to put her down as, she is 50% border terrier, and 50% lakeland terrier. Do I say cross breed or pedigree? (doing it online)I had thought cross breed, but then wondered if that implied a 'heinz', which may cause probs if I had to make a claim?

thanks

Cross. And Heinz etc breeds are MUCH ehalthier on the whole anyway.

Pedigree breeds are really genetic mutations, which is fine if that what you want but there are realted healthissues in many breeds.

pedigree is single breed, cert from the kennel club standard. Yours is cross.

Tigi- Your dog is a Cross breed .

Peachyclair: Cross breeds are NOT much healthier. Dogs are only as healthy as their ancestor genes. A pup from healthy (health screened) purebred parents will have a far better chance of being healthy than the pups of two ill-bred mongrels {with the associated problems of mixed breeding). The genetic problems in some purebreeds is mainly caused by poor breeding practice and lack of health screening. As the ancestory of most crossbreeds/mongrels is unknown it is impossible to say when and what genetic defects will occur in the resulting pups. Reputable breeders of purebreeds will make full use of their dogs pedigree to research any genetic defects in the line, therefore reducing the chance of defects occuring in the pups.

LOL at the idea of ill-bred mongrels - would those be the ones who eat with their paws or who don't ask before leaving the table?

Agree with Peachy re mongrels. That's why it's called hybrid vigour.

Hybrid vigour does not apply when it comes to dogs (I always find myself nodding when I read your posts Joannie2!). If you don't believe it look up Dr George Padgett's research on it. He was a canine geneticist who pretty much disproved this myth. Though you do still hear it all the time!

2labs · 14/01/2007 17:57

PS I own two crossbreeds so am not a mutt-snob!

Edam · 14/01/2007 19:02

Darn it, such a lovely theory. Ho hum. Still think the idea that mongrels are 'ill bred' is quite amusing though: 'Jocasta, do keep away from that ill-bred mongrel, you don't know what you'll catch.'

J2- you are probably right but insurers still work by that idea, here for an article stating that.

cross, it will also be cheaper to insure! so added bonus and they have fwere genetic problems associated with pedigree breeds.

My2kidsmum · 15/01/2007 15:18

Hi

Definately a cross breed. From my experince it's often cheaper to insure a cross breed than a pedigree as well .

2labs · 15/01/2007 15:49

Yes crossbreeds are usually cheaper to insure than pedigrees - certainly my two were. Remember however that insurers make their calculations based on the vet-going and claiming behaviour of owners rather than directly on the health of dogs.

Happy bedtime reading, oops . I do agree about unscrupulous breeders of pedigrees, btw. There are a lot of them about.

Hi, I've insured my pup with Petplan and today needed to make a claim. I have a crossbreed by the way and she there is no difference in price to insure a predigree or a crossbreed with Petplan.

Anway, my tip is to enquire BEFORE you sign on with a vet to see if they will allow your insurers to pay them directly, with you only having to pay the excess. When I telephoned Petplan to verify the claims procedure, they told me that it was at the vet's discretion if they accepted payment directly from Petplan. My vet wanted my money upfront and I'm required to claim the money back. So once my pup's treatment is completed I shall be shopping around for a vet that will accept payment from Petplan. HTH
