Hi CrazyDi,

I had a look at the site. I am a dog lover, although I don't own a Bull Breed, I have Retrievers. It's so sad, the site. The pictures of the abused dogs are so heart wrenching. To be honest, I don't think you'll get much response with this on Mumsnet. If you've looked around other threads, you'll see there is quite a bit of debate raging at the moment about dogs in general.

As for Pit Bulls and Rottweillers and the like, that have been in the media recently, I am of the opinion that not all dogs of a specific breed are bad, and that it is bad ownership that causes problems. The only experience I've had of a Pit Bull was with relatives in Spain who had acquired one when we visited last July. We weren't staying with them, but saw them often with their Pit Bull, JD (named after Jack Daniels!) I was a little bit wary when we first met JD, due to what you hear about these breeds, but he turned out to be a lovely natured dog who loved spending time with my childen. He particularly enjoyed their frequent visits to the fridge together, and chilling out on the sunbeds. JD's owners couldn't keep him due to work commitments, so they rehomed him with friends who have young children and all is going well.

ooh controversial CrazyDi posting a 'I love pit-bulls' link!

And bloody well done to you for doing it.

Shame the site uses american stats for behaviour and dog bites but the message is great - prosecute the owner!

Predujice towards dogs is the same as prejudice towards people - led by ignorance. On a parenting site it would be nice if more people took umbrage with the owners rather than the breed.

Proper training, proper socialising and quality time spent with the dog will help to establish a strong bond and leave you with a well behaved, biddable companion - exactly the same kind of behaviour you'd expect a parent to exhibit with his/her children! This in turn leaves you with a dog with a much lower risk of injuring someone - again the same goes for children.

Our society is one that appears to strive towards ignorance and absolution of responsibility. Educate yourself and take responsibility for your actions.

And for those people who still think pitbulls are inherently dangerous - a bloke at our local pub has had two bull type dogs now (the first died of old age), both were rescue dogs and both had been abused. I can honestly say (even though I'm not a great bull fan - it's the odd looking face for me!)they are two of the friendliest, gentle dogs I've had the fortune to play with.

Best of luck if you're involved with that website.

Sorry to rant about training and responsibility but if more people trained their dogs and behaved responsibly then there'd be less prejudice towards your beloved bulls!

Take care crazydi!

Hi HandyTrinkett. Well said. I thought it was a brave move on CrazyDi's part too, and did wonder if I should alert her to the possible backlash of the MN dog hating lynch mob...

Responsible owners may take care to socialise their animals. But pit bulls, rotweilers and Dobermans appeal to thugs. Of course there are good people who own these dogs, but there are plenty of dangerous animals around. And any dog can turn nasty. Problem is, if a Dandy Dinmont turns nasty, it can bite you but if a pit bull or a rottweiler or other such breed turns nasty it can kill.

My sister had a lovely ex-racing greyhound that she looked after very carefully as he obviously hadn't been brought up as a pet (rehomed by the Retired Racing Greyhound trust). One day he took ill and kept having some kind of seizures. She took him to the vet who couldn't find the cause but gave him tranquilisers. The poor dog then bit her, bit her dp, even tore the lining off the car door on their way back to the vet. Then died of a massive seizure. Clearly he was very ill. But if he'd been a pit bull, they and anyone else he got hold of, could have been seriously injured or worse.

MummyPenguin · 12/01/2007 19:01

That's right, Edam. It is a shame that bull breeds etc appeal to thugs who take advantage of the dogs power and abuse it.

NutterlyUts · 12/01/2007 19:33

Once again I repeat the mantra BLAME THE DEED NOT THE BREED. I feel so so sorry for many many pitbulls etc. MOST of them just want a human to love (like every other dog) and yet its humans who turn them bad and kill them because of what they look like and have or have not done. Its times like this I can honestly say I ashamed to be human.

MummyPenguin · 12/01/2007 23:36

Have you had a look at the website CrazyDi has mentioned, Nutterlyuts? It's so sad.

boo70 · 20/01/2007 22:59

Just looked at your link crazyDi, and have signed the petetion and will ask everyone i know to as well. I had a pitbull terrier for 16 years and now have 3 staffordshire bull terriers and as you rightly say punish the deed not the breed. They are the best breed of family dogs we have ever owned.

Madoldcatlady · 21/01/2007 14:04

Sorry. I can't agree with you on this one.

My neighbour was walking her very lovely, tiny Griffon when a Staffie grabbed it and attacked it.

The little dog struggled to get away and slipped his collar in the process. He escaped being ripped to pieces by running into the road and straight under a car. Obviously he was dead on the spot.

The Staffie owner called his dog, turned his back and walked away.

That to me sums up the breed and the type of w**rs who own them.

I'm prepared to be slated by those of you responsible Staffie owners who control your dogs, but so many don't.

hercules1 · 21/01/2007 14:22

I disagree too with much said here. Certain breeds of dog like the pitbull have characteristics bred into them regardless of who owns them. I chose the breed of dogs I have partly because they are not guard dogs. I didnt want them to have that guardign instinct.
Now I agree that staffs and rottweillers can make great family pets but for people who are experienced.

hunkermunker · 21/01/2007 14:23

I really can't see why anyone wants one of these dogs.

MummyPenguin · 21/01/2007 19:58

It is important to keep in mind that they're not all bad. Yes, Pit Bulls may have certain characteristics, but in responsible hands, the dogs can be well managed and not pose a threat to society. As has been widely discussed on this forum, if these breeds end up in the wrong hands, they are potentially lethal.

boo70 · 21/01/2007 21:14

I think untill you have owned a bull breed you dont know what lovely pets they are, My pitbull who sadly died of old age at 16 was the friendliest and most soppy dog you could ever meet and many peoples views are led by ignorance. I have 3 staffs now who are all lovely family dogs and are great companions for my young children.

geekgrrl · 21/01/2007 21:29

with hunker here - why exactly would someone go and get themselves a pit bull?
(and I'm not a 'dog hater' at all - I like dogs. Really don't get why a supposedly sensible person goes and purposely acquires a dog bred for its aggression)

MamazonAKAfatty · 21/01/2007 21:37

My parents own the most placid dog you will ever hope to meet.
she is a Bull Mastiff, and she is HUGE

my dd climbs all over her, the kids bump her they play with her all day and she barely raises an eyelid (she usualy sleeps)

Of course not all mastifs are like this, indeed we owned one that went for my sister. he was owned by the same family, raised in the same way and treated the same...but his temperement and personality was just completly different.

if an australian man commits a crime do we assume all astralians are bad people? of course not.
It should be the same with animals.

boo70 · 21/01/2007 21:37

Because they are really great family pets and are brillant with children, bad ownership can cause problems in any breed and i think this breed does get lots of bad press. I love my bull breeds and will rescue another if i had a bigger house.

boo70 · 21/01/2007 21:38

I agree with you MamazonAKAfatty.

geekgrrl · 21/01/2007 21:38

uuuhm no.... but Australian guys aren't bred to be criminals.....

boo70 · 21/01/2007 21:40

Most bull breeds are not breed to be fighting dogs either.

hunkermunker · 21/01/2007 22:16

I would imagine the owners of the dogs who've killed children thought they were soppy too.

Nope, still don't get it. Sorry.

MamazonAKAfatty · 21/01/2007 22:18

most Bull breeds aren't bred to be fighters. they are bred and then past on to new owners.

some who are irresponsible will then raise them to fight. but they may have 3-6 litter mates who are all perfectly hapy healthy and well socialised dogs.

its not the dog its the owner in the majority of these cases.

Madoldcatlady · 22/01/2007 07:52

But historically Bull breeds were bred as fighting dogs!

They were certainly never designed to be kept in homes and playing with small children.

The BULL in Bull Mastiff, Bull Terrier etc denotes that they were used in the sport of fighting bulls for goodness sake!!!

Hundreds of years of selectively breeding strength and aggression into these animals can not be undone by bringing them into our homes and calling them pets.

No matter how well they are cared for they have been genetically programmed to behave in a certain way and unfotunately this will come to the surface in some dogs without any provocation.

Madoldcatlady · 22/01/2007 07:53

Oh and just because I'm Madoldcatlady it doesn't mean I don't like dogs. I have one sat on my feet as I type!
