PMSL!!!

We had a cocker spaniel for 13 years and never had anything done bar a quick trim in the summer done by us. I assume that's what you're talking about...

I assumed 'cocker' was slang for something else until noticed which topic the thread was under! Shows how my mind works!

As for the question, definately handstrip your cocker - clipping/shaving the coat will leave the coat wooly and the dog will have difficulty regulating their body temperature. Handstripping will leave the coat easier to brush and less likely to attract dirt. Handstripping also helps promote healthy skin which makes the dog less likely to suffer from hot spots, seborrhea and they smell better too. Handstripping a pet cocker is easy, just pluck out the hair with your finger and thumb, any hair that does not come away easily with a slight tug is not ready to be stripped. Stripping shouldn't hurt the dog. To get a better grip of the coat when you are stripping, I recommend that you sprinkle some chalk into the coat - this stops your fingers sliding up the hair shaft. Contact your dogs breeder or the breed club if you want some handstripping tips or a demo.
