Where to get a labrador pup/find a good breeder?

After LOADS of research and careful thought, we have decided to get a labrador pup early next year and wonder if anyone knows of a reputable breeder in central scotland.
also, any lab owners, are chocolate labs really as daft as their reputation, and if so, is it really a problem?! are they likely to run into roads, or hurt themselves or just be a bit gormless?! hope i haven't offended any lab-lovers, it may be an unfair stereotype!
thanks!

I've browsed this website before and the breeders all seem reputable. Try the kennel club as well.

SilverBells · 18/12/2006 22:02

thanks jimjams2, will have a look.

Silverbells we have a black lab, about 18 mths now and she is pretty much completely barmy so god know how mad a choc one would be she's calmed down alot in the last 6 months but I would recommend obedience training as they do respond well to it, we took ours when she was around 12 mths, well worth it!

dingdonglapinroseonhigh · 18/12/2006 22:27

BTW where are you? We got ours from my sis but she has contacts, might be useful

SilverBells · 18/12/2006 22:33

i think we will be doing obedience classes, beats having a loopy doggy!
we are in central scotland btw.

The Kennel Club has lots of useful info on its website about what to look for with breeders, etc. Or ring them on 0870 606 6750. Or you could just try accosting people out with their dog and asking them where they got theirs. Labradors are very common - even chocolate ones not THAT uncommon - and there's bound to be a breeder or a stud dog not that far from you.

Also, working strains tend to be a bit less gormless than the show variety (although that might not necessarily be what you want - more intelligent working dogs tend to be quite demanding when young and do need a certain amount of training. We've got a working dog (tho not a lab) and sometimes I wonder whether life wouldn't be easier with a nice, bumbling dimwitted show dog). Having said that, Labs do tend to be very trainable, which is probably why they're so popular.

And another good point about chocolate dogs is they don't show the mud so much .

Good luck!

SilverBells · 18/12/2006 23:05

i do quite like the idea of a bumbling dimwit! [snigger] that's a good point, i would hate to have a super clever dog and feel i was under-utilising its abilities, the poor love might be bored stiff as a family pet! btw, love the idea of chocolate labs not showing the mud!!
i never thought of asking dog walkers about their dogs but i have accosted people to ask them where they got their hair done so why not where they got their dog?!
thanks frieda

Lab are lovely dogs and great with childre.
Not the brightest breed but loveable non the less.

They need lots of exercise as get fat very easily and molt like hell constantly.

You will be tripping over dog hair.

Why not rehome a Lab from the Labrador Rescue Society?

SilverBells · 18/12/2006 23:34

hmm, worth a thought, have also looked at becoming a puppy walker for guide dogs for the blind.
are they really that bad when they moult?? daft question, but is moulting seasonal, ie, in spring they lose their winter coat or is it year round with a house dog?

Good luck

orangecake · 18/12/2006 23:57

Hi again Silver, our black lab used to Molt contantly. Im not the most house proup person around byt this stuff was everywhere.

They also like to swim and will find water whenever out so get used to that wet dog smell.

They are the loveliest of breeds though and I miss my Lab terribly (rehomed due to work commitments hence my suggestin of Rescue Society)

SilverBells · 19/12/2006 00:06

sorry you had to have your dog rehomed, orangecake, we will definitely be looking at all these options. we want to get a dog after our holiday next february so am starting to think about it now.

I'm waiting till March so I can settle the dog in over easter...
Do you work at all SilverBells?

SilverBells · 19/12/2006 00:11

no, i'm a SAHM. how bout you?

OP posts:
drummumadrumming · 19/12/2006 00:13

I work in a pre-school... but only do 2 days 9-3.. plus all the holidays off. I'm hoping to put a dogflap in so the dog could access the garden if he wanted.. plus my dad has offered to walk it.

SilverBells · 19/12/2006 00:14

that sounds great. btw, how do dog flaps work?? how do burglars etc not get in too??

OP posts:
drummumadrumming · 19/12/2006 00:17

I presume they work like a cat flap. We have a back porch where the dog will have a bed. The 2 doors off it will be locked.
Hopefuly the dog will deter any burglars

SilverBells · 19/12/2006 00:19

ahh, that makes sense!
have been on and off mn for ages tonight and have just seen it is past my bedtime! keep posting about your search for a doggy! good luck too!
