good luck for tomorrow. I never been a 'cat person' but finally gave in and we got a 5 mth old kitten 2 months ago and she's so lovely. I can't believe how mad I am for her. She is very very pretty and extremely affectionate, which helps a lot. WE kept her in for the month, and at the end of the month, had her spayed, so she was 1st allowed out after her op, so def no chance of getting caught out.

She's mad for climbing inside of plastic bags which is not so good, so watch out for that one.

And I know she's gonna go WILD for our CHristmas tree, but hey ho. Oh, so tip tear our curtains to shreads, so watch out of that one too.

ASi wont be home till about 7.30pm and my dd will be put into bed... do i leave the cat in the kitchen in the cat carrier with the door open and have food/water out for her? or leave the door shut over nite ?

OP posts:

do you mean door of kitchen or door of carrier? I'd leave her in one room, so if your room of choice is kitchen (do you have litter tray in there?) then let her into room. Will you be there to keep her company, even occasionally or are youplannning on leaving her alone 1st night?

aww. will your dd be able tos ee her before she goes to bed? How old is she? My boys were so thrilled. They still are.

MerryBiglipsmas · 04/12/2006 22:24

i meant the door of the cat carrier....yes my 26m old dd will get to meet the cat tmrw with me when ill be collecting the cat... thinking of keeping the cat in the kitchen on her first night with the litter tray, water and food but will be going in and out anyway which i do often to keep an eye on her

What time is the best time to feed the cat? or i go by what the owner will tell me?

When i got mine I just put out a 3rd of the amount recommended on the packet 3 times a day, but didn't do it as specific times, just made sure I gave her the recommended amount but staggered.

I was told (my mil who's had cats for years and by vet) to just give dried food (purlina? or science plan type food). My vet also said that this dried food is labelled as kitten up to one year, then adult, but he recommended adult from 6 months, as the kitten feed was very high in calories, and adult best. My cat also showed strong preference for the adult food.

But I guess it's sensible to check what the current owner is doing, and if the cat is used to tins or whatever, to maybe continue this, but phase in the dried if you decide to go down this path. hth and good luck. Awww. What colour is she (she is a she?) Are you going to get her spayed? Mine's op went so well, it's hard to believe.

MerryBiglipsmas · 05/12/2006 08:20

its a tortoise shell and white short haired cat and yes its a She and yes will be getting her spayed VERY soon as its ideal now as she is 6m old now

i just hope she doenst rip our expensive leather 3 piece suite - must get a water pistol incase as got the stuff inc the scratch post so that will be in the kitchen along with her bed - if she will ever sleep in it!...

How long have u had yours now?

We've had our about 5 weeks. She's also tortoise shell on back and white on tummy and legs. She had her op last week and it went so well. She was wobbly on her feet that night, but the next day, you wouldn't've known, apart from the shaved belly and stitches. Sounds stupid, but I wasn't expecting the shaving. All her lovely fluffy soft white fur gone. She's right now lying on the desk with her head in me elbow, snoozing and purring away. ahhhh. you getting excited?

ernest · 05/12/2006 22:26

I guess she's in her new home now? Hope you have a quiet night.

Oh, just remembered one thign I got lucky with by chance was getting a collar with a bell on. It's obv, supposed to scare off birds, and while it can be a pain at night, it's been totally invaluable on the many occasions I've been looking for her. In fact, once she got out into the communal car park/underground garage, and I only knew she'd got out be hearing the little tinkle of her bell, so it's been really worth it.

Chosen a name yet? Mine's MInxy. The boys keep saying we should change her name 'cos she keeps trying to live up to it.

we found a kitten in sept oct time, he was lost or abandoned close by, and about 3-4 months old

i didnt keep him in at all, as i wasnt planning on keeping him (we looked for the owners), but from the first time he was fed he knew which side his bread was buttered and never strayed , lol

after about 19 days of no success in finding an owner i took him to the vet and made him ours by getting him microchipped, 2 days later he broke his leg falling out of a tree lol, but at that gae they heal really quickly so he was fine after a week (it was the only time i have kept him housebound)

he's very affectionate with the kids, i tend to not have that much to do with him, but he has attached himself to me recently, and taken to waking me by attacking my toes or rubbing his bum in my face

i keep my bedroom door firmly shut now lol

he is due to get his balls whipped off

MerryBiglipsmas · 06/12/2006 08:41

well here i am with "Hissy" the cat...she settled in brilliantly last nite but she did get stuck behind the washing machine when we first open the cat carrier door...but managed to get it out an hour later!....she came in with us in the living room, had a little nose around and sat with dp for an hour or so purring away

She had even dirtied in her litter (keep it up girl!)

BUT i did get a fright as she had found her sleeping spot - on the landing so her basket is now there! - and in the middle of the night as we 've kept all the upstairs doors shut, she had came into our bedroom and start stroking on my feet..i did have a little fright and took her straight out onto the landing.

Atm she is in her basket till she gets used to my DD as the other house where she was staying the kids were older

Many thanks for everyone for the advices as i wouldnt know what to do! like Ernest too xx
