Catlovers, can you help?
I have 2 dc's (cats, obviously), a tiny fluffy adorable persian and a dog-sized moody maine-coon. the fluffy bullies and terrorises the bigger maine-coon, deliberately sits at the top / bottom of stairs, outside the door of the room other cat is in, in front of kitchen door so big cat can't get to food or litter etc. And sometimes just attacks big cat unprovoked. Big cat is moody and highly strung at the best of times. She had a bag leg injury earlier this year and we think it was from running away from evil cat. Vet suggested diazepan(sp) - I tried it for a day or two but it didnt make any difference. Now have to lock evil cat up at night and when out for long periods.

IHi. I have rehomed a few 'last chancers' cats in my time (ie you setle them or they need euthanasia...) and ime the best thing to do is to let them establish their own order- indeed that is the ONLY way forwards. Of course, the injury thing is a problem, minimise any risks by trimming claws, providing a scratcher.

The other thing is that I take it you have 2 litter trays, 2 scratchers etc? because if you don't this won't improve.

I know it seems odd that the little one is winning- our 4 month old three legged kitten runs rings around our 8 year old ex feral cat. Thing is though only they can establish the order, it can't be imposed upon them.

Notnigella, you could try this ; never tried it myself but some of my other catty friends swear by it.

Agree with Peachy too; they have to establish their own order. When I was younger I had three cats and two of them loathed each other. Tbh, it never truly sorted itself out but the attacks lessened; basically we had a "downstairs cat" and an "upstairs cat".

Best of luck.

I don't know if this will help but a vet recently told me that jealousy or cats who don't get on sometimes only happens when the owners are around. He set up a cam corder and when they weren't there everything was fine, cats even cleaned eachother, when they came home the killings started again!

thanks, veronica, i'd like to believe that story, but i know fluffy bullies fatcat when we are in bed, so think she prob does it when we are out too . We effectively have an upstairs cat and downstairs cat now, as fatcat spends most of her time in our bedroom and only comes out to eat and litter. Peachy, I have tried different litter trays in the kitchen, in different rooms etc and the fluffy always used them to as if to make a territorial point. M&W, I talked to my vet about the pheremone thing and he didnt rate it and said it was quite expensive, but if you know of people who have had success it might be worth investigating again, thanks all.
PS What are you getting your cats for Xmas??

Is Fluffy neutered? If not and you don't want him (her? not sure) to be then you're kinda stuck with it.

An upstairs cat and a downstairs cat is a normal state of affairs in a duel cat household, certainly it sumamrises many I know. That in in itself is not a disaster.

As I said trim the claws and do any preventative stuff. You may be able to find a litter Fluffu dislikes that the other one wll use- my Kitten wonb't touch scented, for example, or the wood stuff.

yes, both neutered. hadnt thought about the differnt types of litter tho, thanks
