Dog Grooming, how much do you pay?

As it hasn't stopped raining for days our poor GSD is thick with mud and past the stage of being able to brush it all out. We usually give him a hose down but it is far too cold so have opted to get a dog groomer to give him a brush and wash up, short back and sides, or whatever they do!

How much does it usually cost? We are expecting about £20 or is this too much/too little?

What is GSD? I had a springer spaniel (so medium size) and her full grooming cost was 45pounds. Hope that gives you an idea.

PrincessPeaHead · 15/11/2006 19:00

german shepherd.

I have two standard poodles - they cost £30 each for wash, clip, nails etc etc every 6-8 weeks. this is the standard rate for "big dogs" in swindon. A couple of years ago it was £25 but they all seem to have raised their rates.

I guess if you aren't clipping, just want a wash and brush up, it might be less.

greenday · 15/11/2006 19:05

Tehe! I did think it was german shepherd but the 'D' got me confused! And I forgot to mention, I live in London and so maybe grooming cost is higher.

PrincessPeaHead · 15/11/2006 19:07

"d" is for "dog" lolol

I used to live near a dog groomer in london called "Peter's Posh Pets". I bet he charges more than £20!

Chandra · 15/11/2006 19:10

I think where are you located may influence the price. We pay £17 per dog (small dog with difficult to untangle hair) or £20 if they pick them up.

brimfull · 15/11/2006 19:10

I have a huge bearded collie ,it costs £25.00 for her to be bathed and clipped. It takes 2 hrs. at £45.00 for springer.

Macdog · 15/11/2006 19:13

I have Springer. we pay £25 for shampoo and full clip. takes a couple of hours

HuwEdwards · 15/11/2006 19:14

£16 for a wash, groom and clip - springer spaniel

TwoIfBySea · 15/11/2006 19:16

We live in West Lothian. Sorry, I am that used to saying GSD and expecting everyone to know what I am rabbiting on about!

We might get his coat neatened up a bit. He deserves a little pre-Christmas pampering. It usually takes us less than a hour to bathe him ourselves as he has medium length hair but it was just the thought of what needs to be done. There is a small stream nearby which is too cold at the moment for him to have a dip, that is how he keeps clean during the summer.

Would help if our garden wasn't a complete mess, we have major drainage issues that the landlord won't sort out.

OMG! I'm starting to get the idea that my dog's groomer is laughing to the bank. I'm obviously paying more than market rate for a springer spaniel!!! Unfortunately, we had to put my dear dog to sleep last month and I would gladly pay 45 over and over again to have her back. Sob!

Macdog · 15/11/2006 19:22

for lost dog, greenday

kid · 15/11/2006 19:25

We don't pay anything for our dog, we bath him ourselves, have clippers to do his nails and I cut his fur a couple of times each year. It does help that he is a Yorkie so not too big!

greenday · 15/11/2006 19:27

Thank you macdog!

DarrellRivers · 15/11/2006 19:37

we pay way too much £25-30 for a minature schnauzer but she often only gets clipped 2-3 times a year so it probably is a big job.
Someone I know has spent £100 on a proper pair of dog clippers and is saving the money by doing it herself. She has two dogs
It does make sense, but have to work myself up to make the initial outlay plus I think cutting the dog's hair may be just the last job on the earth that I need

TwoIfBySea · 15/11/2006 19:49

oh greenday sorry to hear that

Hi Greenday, Sorry to here about your lovely dog . If your groomer was just clipping your dog all over then £45 is alot. However, Springers shouldn't be clipped (it ruins the coat and they generally go wooly), they should be gently scissored and trimmed to keep a natural coat. A experienced spaniel groomer may charge more for grooming a springer properly.

Twoifbysea - I would say £20 for a bath and tidy-up sounds about right. GSD should never be clipped or even trimmed - both will alter the texture of the coat making it very unmanagable, thick and wooly. Once the Groomer has tidied the coat, a good brush through every day should keep it in great condition.

£40 here for a Bearded Collie but we don't have him frou-froued,we have him clipped. He thinks its more manly.

Sugarfree · 16/11/2006 13:14

I did it myself the other week but it took 5 evenings and he went through some 'interesting' looks in that time.
We could only take him out after dark that week.

WriggleJiggle · 16/11/2006 13:31

lol at Sugarfree.

Would a having my labs groomed help control the hair loss - at the moment they are moulting like mad, literally you can just pull the hair out.

At the moment I just brush them every few days.

2labs · 16/11/2006 13:55

WJ - grooming your lab every day will definitely help reduce the hair around your house - better outside than in! Here is a great website with tips for labrador grooming: here

You have my sympathy - but pity me as well with two!

brimfull · 16/11/2006 14:06

that's a lot sugarfree,I pay £25 to have my beardie clipped.Hope she doesn't increase her prices!

Sugarfree · 16/11/2006 14:17

In the South East ggirl.
Where are you?

k9kuts · 16/11/2006 14:46

im a dog groomer in the northwest and i charge from 21.50 for a shortcoated gsd and 30.00+ for a long coat.

brimfull · 16/11/2006 19:14

hants/dorset border, actually dog was groomed today,we decided to leave her long as she's 12 and it's getting cold.I expect I'll be ringing up to get her clipped in a few weeks.

PennySweets · 21/11/2006 23:00

I pay £26 for my Golden Retriever. I use a mobile groomer who comes to my house in her specially adapted van and does him outside (in the van.) I was surprised to hear some of you say that it takes two hours. My Goldie is in and out of the van in less than an hour, and the bath that he gets in that time is very quick. I'm actually thinking of getting someone else, as I got the groomer to do my Labrador the last time she came, and the Lab was in and out of that van in less than 20 mins and I was charged £20.
