Where did the babies come from?!

Looked in the fish tank and discovered about 20-30 tiny baby fish . I've no idea who the proud parents are - possibilities include mollies, guppies and neon /green tetras.

I was worried they may get eaten by the others so I have cut up a coke bottle, put holes in the side and then put it inside a leg of tights - so the water can still circulate, but nothing can eat them.

What do I need to do now? What do they eat? Whose are they ?

They will be either baby guppies or mollies. They are livebearers - ie retain eggs inside and 'give birth' to live young. Tetras lay eggs and are a bit harder to please in terms of suitable conditions so i doubt it will be them.
You have a choice - protect them from the adults to let them develop, then find homes for them if you dont have tank space, or let them be free in the tank and view them as a diet supplement for the others.....Some will make it, but you wont have the same sort of population explosion.
Bear in mind that guppies/mollies can have over 50 babies at a time when adult - you may want to reconsider having mixed sex fish!

Thanks. I'm really excited . I thought breeding fish was really difficult to encourage. Will keep them separate and hope enough survive to warrent buying another tank. DH will think I did it on purpose .

What do I do about food? I've just given them some flakes but they didn't seem interested.

ooh congratulations! what are their names

Guppies and mollies are only too happy to produce large no of young. That's why we stopped having them - ran out of rehoming options....!
When they get a little bigger it should become obvious which variety the babies are - tho guppy babies are not as brightly coloured and mum and dad to start with. And depending on the mix, and quality of the line breeding - may not look anything like them even when grown.
As for food - you can get proper 'fry food' - like a powder, but as far as i remember all we did was crush the flake food to a powder so it was a better size for them. When they are very new I think they have a little yolk-sac inside them so may not be desperate just yet.
Good luck!

I fear some may have been eaten already, but the survivors are named as follows: Fabian, Faith, Faizah, Fido, Finbar, Farah, Farley, Felicity, Fenton, Fern, Filbert, Finlay, Filmore, Fletcher, Floyd, Frasier, Fedora, Fiona, Ferdinand, Fergie, Fergus, Fitz, Frodo, Fonda, Felix, Fenella and Feodosy!
