If you have any suggestions at all to this problem I would be very grateful.
We have a 4 month old kitten which we got from an animal rescue centre . She was not litter trained when we got her at 10 weeks as I think she was a stray.
Anyway she didint take to a litter tray so we trained her to go outside which worked beautifully for 3 weeks - now she has decided that she prefers my kitchen floor!!!!!!
We have an older cat who we never had any problems training but this kitten is driving me up the wall.
I searched the internet and found a site which suggested laying silver foil on the floor as cats dont like the feel of it. Not our cat she just pisses on top of it!!!
Help does any one have any suggestions

citrus smells like lemon juice or lime juice (I find that jif stuff useful) are supposed to put them off big time as smell supposedly to strong for their nose.

I usually sprinkle it over the floor for a few days (although it is a bit sticky) until they stop doing it.

Are you putting her outside at certain times of day to see if she will go to toilet then? Might help.

rub her nose in it and put her straight out...

sounds harsh but it worked with ours

(rub gently)

NatalieJane · 09/11/2006 15:12

I don't know an awful lot about training a cat, ours was already trained when we brought her home, but I think firstly I would take the kitten to the vets, cat's are clean animals and so my first thought would be there is something stopping yours from being able to go outside, maybe an infection or something.

If not, ring the shelter you got her from, they will have the best advice I should think.

NatalieJane · 09/11/2006 15:13

Please don't rub her nose in it, this will not train her to go outside, this will train her to 'hide' what shes done, so you might not then know where to clean to get rid of the smell.

Macdog · 09/11/2006 15:16

Some cleaners leave behind an ammonia smell that encourages them to keep marking the same spot.
Use a solution of biological washing powder to clean up and wipe with a cloth+surgical spirit to remove the fatty deposits in their urine.

Have you tried filling a litter box with earth, grabbing her when she squats and putting her in the box?(realise you probably have, so sorry)

megandsoph · 09/11/2006 15:18

I was advised by the CPL to get a dog crate which will fit my cats litter tray, food and a wee bedded area in and keep her in there for 3 weeks only giving half an hour cuddle breaks a day.

NatalieJane · 09/11/2006 15:20

OMG MegandSoph, did you do that?

As I said I don't know much about training cats, dogs I can do, but that sounds awful (not blaming you BTW, if that is what you were advised then I am sure you thought you were doing the right thing.)

ishouldbeironing · 09/11/2006 15:21

We know that she usually needs to go within 20mins after breakfast so we take her out and she runs straight back in again. She struggles to get away and is desperate to use the floor we just cant seem to break the habit.
I will try the Jif thing and see if the works.

NJ yep not 3 weeks though and she was out for about 2 hours cuddle time. I have been brought up with cats and have a rescued mum and daughter.

I was desperate and considered getting her re homed but this is what they told me to do. She still does the odd poo here and there which concerns me as she does it where she feels like it and I'm pregnant (cat poo is dodgy in pregnancy)but more otnen than not now she will go in a litter tray or outside when I have the back door open.

Belive me NJ I'm a hooooge cat lover too.

NatalieJane · 09/11/2006 15:34

Sorry I honestly wasn't blaming you, just couldn't imagine that locking a cat up for all but 1/2 an hour a day would do her any good what so ever, I think ours would be wild by the time three weeks was up!!

zippy34 · 09/11/2006 15:43

Has something scared her while she was out so that she's frightened to go outside?

My gran's adult cat started doing this when she was terrorised by a feral cat that arrived in the neighbourhood. She was litter trained though so used a tray indoors. She started going outside again when they managed to trap the feral cat (he was relocated - at least that was what they told me...)

ishouldbeironing · 09/11/2006 16:13

She is usually worse first thing in the morning and it is dark here - could I have a cat that is scared of the dark????
Also doesnt like the rain and it has been v. wet also!!
Oh no thats all I need a cat that wont go out in the rain or dark

Make a hamster and kitten pie

chickeninabox · 09/11/2006 16:15

not sure if it would work for a kitten, but put small dishes of dried food wherever she wees - they don't like to piss on their food !

It worked for my ageing kitty who decided to piss and shit everywhere rather than go outside like any other cat.

ishouldbeironing · 09/11/2006 16:17

RIPhamster good suggestion as I have a hamster too!!!
