Getting rid off dog after less than a year

My friend has just got rid of her dog after 10 months because he chewed on everything and she reached her limit when the dog chewed a hole in her brand new carpet. The dog was also very jumpy and she felt she couldn't train him.

Tbh I don't really blame her because I'm not a dog person at all, BUT what made my laugh was when she said
"The children have learned a lesson..."
and I thought what lesson is that?
What happened to "A dog is for life, not just for Christmas?"

I must say I fantasise about rehoming mine quite frequently (but wouldn't do it...) so I am partially sympathetic to your friend

I must be fantastically lucky. I have a 5 month old Yorkie x Jack Russell. Up to now he's house trained, hasn't chewed anything, doesn't create if he's left at home for a couple of hours. He goes to puppy training classes and can now sit, lie down, wait, stay and come on command,(the latter sounds a bit dodgy!LOL!) He's best mates with one of the cats and is generally a little angel. I'd have another like him tomorrow!

Don't speak to soon! it's bad luck! Have you already been through Yorkie's adolescence??? knock on wood if you haven't.

A Bichon Frise? My mum has one and he is gorgeous - as my kids put it a "fluffy cloud" but can see where the gay thing could from.

Gorgeous dogs, impossible to keep clean (mums goes go the dog parlour every so often), and are totally stupid to boot.

What do you mean Chandra? What's round the corner for us?

Chandra · 11/11/2006 11:08

I don't know if you will have the same luck as we did as every dog is different but my lovely one had the hormones surge and everything learned in the puppy class was forgotten, every command was met with a bark and then he got into removing the wall paper of the hall, and chewing all the things he didn't as a puppy, forgetting about having sex with pillows and visitors legs!

But well, all sorted with second round of training.

OOh Hope not! He has however already got a gold medal in cushion humping!

Hey Chandra, when dud you get telepathic? The bloody dog peed on the carpet 4 times yesterday after weeks of being clean!!!!!!!![hmmm]

2ndtime · 12/11/2006 17:17

Did, even!

Chandra · 12/11/2006 18:14

I told you it was bad luck to talk to soon!!!

Makes me when people buy a 'cute' puppy without giving any apparent thought to how to train/look after it.
Dogs need hard work from day 1 to learn how to live within your family.
I've had 2 dogs who came from homes where their owners couldn't cope:1 Border Collie & 1 Springer Spaniel.
People think good dogs just 'happen' without them havng to do anything.

We had a dog once that we had to rehome before he was a year old. Not because he chewed or any usual doggy things but he was a complete nutcase and I worried about him with the dts. We knew the people he was rehomed to, they own a large house in the country and he became a working dog which is what he needed. I felt guilty and still do, we were actually banned from the training class he was so bad. Now he spends all day every day outside regardless of the weather and according to his new owner hates being indoors unless he is ready to sleep.

So not all cases are irresponsible people.

We now have a lovely GSD who is so opposite in temperament although he is a bit daft it is in no way aggressive. I look at him and wonder if we could have done something else to keep the other dog but while Alex is a family dog the other one wasn't. I had worried about the message rehoming the previous dog gave dts but they see the work that goes into grooming and training Alex so know the responsibility of animal ownership.
