We've just had a new addition to our family, an eight week old pup that the owner decided he did not want , but lovely for us because we were looking at getting a dog soon!.
Does anyone have a puppy/dog cage they no longer need please? I have a two year old and think that the poor little puppy might need somewhere to escape to! Thanks so much .
p.s. can you tell I'm really excited?!!!!!

What type is she? By BROWNY on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 7:17:39 PMHi Mellowma, we've been told she is a Staff, but I'm not sure. I'll try my local Freecycle and if you could too I'd be very grateful.
Have you a new puppy? I've never had a dog before only cats, so I'll need to do a lot of research, have you any tips on housetraining please . By Mellowma on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 7:42:25 PMOurs is a staffie too. She is 16 weeks. Cage is a great idea. We have found ours quite easy to train. We got her very young (7 weeks) and got her cage a week later.
I have a great book "How to housebreak your dog in 7 days". I would suggest you buy it. I would give you mine but like to keep referring to it.
The thing is it suggests you wait until they are 16 weeks at least until to begin proper training which you do by keeping them confined to the cage for 7 days and monitoring them eatng/weeing - all in the book. They find it difficult to hold in their wees until then as the bladder is so small.
We put snoop in the kitchen and put paper down for her and found she was quite quick to use this at night. Other than that, I used to watch her like a hawk when she was very little, and still do.
Put your pup out or keep retricted to paper, first thing in morning, after meals, after excitement/play and generally every 45 mins when little. Lots of praise when they go outside/paperif you are planning on having her wee outside don't overpraise her for doing it on the paper.
To encourage pup to wee outside take bit of paper she has weed on outside and let her get the scent then when she wees, start the over-praising.
Another thing...I was always lifting paper she had a wee on it but its all about scent so try to leave a bit for her at all times. If she/he does wee on carpet/wood make sure you clean it up properly as they can smell it and will return to any smell.
When pup gets older ie 16 weeks (so book says) you can then actually try to train their bladder (so to speak). I would say snoop is pretty much getting their now but we do still have accidents
Hope this helps.
To think I was always cat person this is long By Mellowma on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 7:44:30 PMpmsl at "we were told she was a staffie".
We were told this too. She looks like a muscular Jack Russell though By BROWNY on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 11:53:25 PMHi again Mellowmama, thanks for your lovely post and your advice, I need all the help that I can get. Well, tonight's been fun, she's slept practically all evening and when she did wake up she yelped for England... I soon figured out she was hungry and thirsty, then she promptly fell straight back to sleep again . I'm a bit worried that she'll wake up in the night and start crying, but I've put some old fleecy blankets down and she's got a new toy cuddly that she's really taken too . Oh, and we've had a family vote and her name's Sasha, she's all white with a little brown ear!
Thanks for the suggestion of the book, could you tell me it's ISBN number please, it's usually on the inside cover of the book. If that's not there, could you tell me the author's name please?
Well, I know what you mean about them looking like a muscly Jack Russell, ours looks exactly the same, I was surprised how long her legs were!
I've told a few friends and they've expressed concern that we've got a staffie pub, but I've read on the internet that they're good with children, what do you think?
Sorry this is so long, but as you know I'm new to all the doggy stuff.
