BROWNY'S THREAD FROM WANTED

BROWNY · 04/11/2006 23:58

We've just had a new addition to our family, an eight week old pup that the owner decided he did not want , but lovely for us because we were looking at getting a dog soon!.

Does anyone have a puppy/dog cage they no longer need please? I have a two year old and think that the poor little puppy might need somewhere to escape to! Thanks so much .

p.s. can you tell I'm really excited?!!!!!

By Mellowma on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 3:47:37 PMWe are using ours just now. Can you try your local freecylce? I could try my one too and your could just send postage if I manage to get one.

What type is she? By BROWNY on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 7:17:39 PMHi Mellowma, we've been told she is a Staff, but I'm not sure. I'll try my local Freecycle and if you could too I'd be very grateful.

Have you a new puppy? I've never had a dog before only cats, so I'll need to do a lot of research, have you any tips on housetraining please . By Mellowma on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 7:42:25 PMOurs is a staffie too. She is 16 weeks. Cage is a great idea. We have found ours quite easy to train. We got her very young (7 weeks) and got her cage a week later.

I have a great book "How to housebreak your dog in 7 days". I would suggest you buy it. I would give you mine but like to keep referring to it.

The thing is it suggests you wait until they are 16 weeks at least until to begin proper training which you do by keeping them confined to the cage for 7 days and monitoring them eatng/weeing - all in the book. They find it difficult to hold in their wees until then as the bladder is so small.

We put snoop in the kitchen and put paper down for her and found she was quite quick to use this at night. Other than that, I used to watch her like a hawk when she was very little, and still do.

Put your pup out or keep retricted to paper, first thing in morning, after meals, after excitement/play and generally every 45 mins when little. Lots of praise when they go outside/paperif you are planning on having her wee outside don't overpraise her for doing it on the paper.

To encourage pup to wee outside take bit of paper she has weed on outside and let her get the scent then when she wees, start the over-praising.

Another thing...I was always lifting paper she had a wee on it but its all about scent so try to leave a bit for her at all times. If she/he does wee on carpet/wood make sure you clean it up properly as they can smell it and will return to any smell.

When pup gets older ie 16 weeks (so book says) you can then actually try to train their bladder (so to speak). I would say snoop is pretty much getting their now but we do still have accidents

Hope this helps.

To think I was always cat person this is long By Mellowma on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 7:44:30 PMpmsl at "we were told she was a staffie".

We were told this too. She looks like a muscular Jack Russell though By BROWNY on Saturday, 4 November, 2006 11:53:25 PMHi again Mellowmama, thanks for your lovely post and your advice, I need all the help that I can get. Well, tonight's been fun, she's slept practically all evening and when she did wake up she yelped for England... I soon figured out she was hungry and thirsty, then she promptly fell straight back to sleep again . I'm a bit worried that she'll wake up in the night and start crying, but I've put some old fleecy blankets down and she's got a new toy cuddly that she's really taken too . Oh, and we've had a family vote and her name's Sasha, she's all white with a little brown ear!

Thanks for the suggestion of the book, could you tell me it's ISBN number please, it's usually on the inside cover of the book. If that's not there, could you tell me the author's name please?

Well, I know what you mean about them looking like a muscly Jack Russell, ours looks exactly the same, I was surprised how long her legs were!

I've told a few friends and they've expressed concern that we've got a staffie pub, but I've read on the internet that they're good with children, what do you think?

Sorry this is so long, but as you know I'm new to all the doggy stuff.

Congrats Browny. I dont have a cage to offer but I do love mine. No poos or chewing over night.
What kind of pup is it?

shewhoneverdusts · 07/11/2006 14:57

We have a cage that's just sitting folded up. Where are you? Oh and it is a large cage, as we have a labrador.

BROWNY · 07/11/2006 17:04

Sorry about not replying yesterday, I was dashing around buying food for my Dad's birthday and frantically trying to tidy the house before relatives came!

Anway, 2nd time... the vet seems to think that she is a cross between a Staffie and some sort of terrier, but said that time will tell . She has settled straight in, but the cat's had her nose pushed out and refuses to come downstairs!

Shewhoneverdusts.... I love your name by the way! I'm in Liverpool, where are you? It would be so handy to have a cage, it would make it much easier to contain all the puddles etc and the poor little thing would have somewhere to escape from my four children too.

Hi Browny, I'm in Southampton, so that's probably a bit too far for a local pick up! what a shame. See if you can get one in your local free paper, or the big pet shops like pet city or something like that, they have second hand notice boards. Good luck

BROWNY · 08/11/2006 11:07

Hi, Shewhoneverdusts, that is a shame, but what if I could arrange a courier? I'm sure one of my friends on mumsnet could recommend someone?

shewhoneverdusts · 09/11/2006 10:24

well it is just sitting behind my sofa, so if you can get it to you for less than the cost of buying one, go for it! Let me know.

BROWNY · 09/11/2006 14:34

Thanks, shewhoneverdusts, I'll look into it and will let you know .

Hi again, shewhoneverdusts, I tried to CAT you but couldn't. I've found a courier that was recommended by another m.netter, on e-bay of all places:

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290048897828&fromMakeTrack=true

if that doesn't work, the item number is:
290048897828

Seller is: sboon1972

If this company seems o.k. to you, I will e-mail them with payment. Please let me know your name, address and what day/time you prefer for collection.

Thank you so much for your very kind offer, I appreciate your help. Hopefully, it will make owning a pup that much easier .

Hiya
That's fine with me,will they pick up on Saturdays? sorry didn't read all the blurb as am trying (not very hard obviously!) to get ready for school housepoint assembly. The reason I ask is I work lunchtimes at the moment but start new job in 2 weeks. My email add. is [email protected], might be easier to email me if you like. Let me know as I know it would make such a difference to you, honest!

BROWNY · 11/11/2006 10:51

Hiya, I'll contact them and ask if they can pick up on Saturday and will e-mail you when they reply to me, if that's o.k. I know having a cage would make my life a lot easier, it's taken me one hour and a half to clean up the number 2's she left me this morning, she managed to fall in it, so she had to have her first bath before any of my children had their breakfast! At least, if she had a cage all the mess would be contained. We've only had her for a week but it seems like ages.

Hiya! Well you can stop the >>!! Of course, all the clearing up is down to me, I feel like I'm doing nothing but soaking up pee with kitchen towels and spraying 1001 pet odour eliminating spray everywhere! Will e-mail you soon .

Hiya
have emailed you too, but just in case you are on here first I thought I'd try to speak to you. the courier has just been into dh's work to pick up cage, but I thought we were doing wednesday, weren't we? Let me know, cheers

BROWNY · 13/11/2006 23:25

Hi shewhoneverdusts, yes we were doing Wednesday, I told him that, but as he only accepts Paypal I had to e-mail him first for his own address to send the postal order to. He has only just got back to me with his address, so I will post payment first class tomorrow. I have absolutely no idea why a courier came today, especially without being paid first, very strange way to run a business!. I have e-mailed him to check if he will receive payment in time for a courier to collect on Wednesday and I'll let you know as soon as I hear from him. Sorry .
