Our ridiculously-adored giant Siberian rescue cat woke me up this morning moaning in pain and shaking. We quickly realised something was seriously wrong. My DH took him to emergency out of hours vet (I stayed with DD1 and DD2 both very little) and after sedation & full tests they found he had a blocked bladder. They did the operation involving a catheter to flush everything through and clear the blockage. The blood tests showed very high urea levels in his kidneys so he had probably had it for a few days, and we hadn't realised :(
Just spoke with the vet who said he is being very vocal having come round.... But his bladder is getting full again and he is not showing any interest in the litter tray. They say they may need to sedate him and flush him out again.

That is it really. I am genuinely so worried about him. The house is empty without his giant furry presence. And I feel so awful that we didn't notice, and the worst thing is we moved house a few months back and it has really stressed him out. AND we changed litter trays... And... oh god I am just utterly gutted and worried.

And my husband is at the airport about to go on a business trip, so I have been crying alone on the sofa (cuddling my other darling cat)

Hand hold this crazy, sad cat woman?

So sorry you're going through this. Flowers

If it helps any, my cat had similar problems. In his case it was a blockage caused by crystals that had built up over time. It took a little while to get him back on his paws feet but it was fine once the vet had got it all under control.

These days he has special food to help prevent crystals and he's absolutely fine. We were told it's a well-known thing for neutered males of around 4-6yrs.

I hope your boy is on the mend very soon.

Thank you :) glad to hear your cat got better. He is a mad, gentle (ish!) giant and we are all completely soppy about our 2. Hate thinking how scared he will be in the vet. Going to see him in the morning as they said it may help him to relax.

It may well have been the stress of moving that has led to this. Not to blame you at all, cats are just stressy creatures and the smallest thing can upset them. Stress is one of the biggest causes of feline idiopathic cystitis. So he may have crystals, or there may be no obvious reason like that in which case it is termed idiopathic. Your vet should get the urine tested to get an idea of what is happening in your cats case. It is quite a subject to cover on here, but can I suggest "international cat care" as an excellent source of information online for owners. You can search for blocked bladder and have a good read. It is worth it for tips on how to try and prevent this happening again, with info on providing litter trays, plenty of water sources etc. Unfortunately it is often something that recurs once they have had it once, but there are steps you can take to try and reduce the likelihood.
Hope your boy gets better soon. Usually we have them in for 48 hours with an indwelling catheter, and then for another 24 to check they are peeing for themselves. Of course your vet may be different. I expect he will also be on a drip to try and flush his kidneys through. Good luck to him :)

Thank you. All very helpful. The nurse just told me on the phone there were no crystals in the urine. She said a 'plug' of some kind would have blocked the urethra, causing great irritation. Apparently the area is still spasming so they sedated him a bit and hand expressed his bladder as it was full again.

He is on fluids also to flush his system like you said. They intend to do more bloods in the morning

coppertop · 13/04/2015 13:17

Another one checking in to see how he is.

Hi all. Thank you for asking. Just spent an hour cuddling him in the special cat cuddle room at the vet clinic :) He certainly isn't himself BUT he looks like he is on the mend. He was so happy when I came in bless him. He is urinating small amounts but he is going - and I got them to change his litter to the one we normally have - then he immediately had a go. They even mentioned him possibly going home tomorrow :) but I have to wait and see until the morning. Thank you for listening to this mad cat lady Wink

That's great news for both of you. Flowers

I hope he's back home with you all as soon as possible.
