He's been a bit itchy last few days so i've just bathed him and when i was drying saw the fleas. We did suspect he had them but now i know i'm itching all over.

DH is at work on nights and 8mth old ds is asleep in bed so i can't even get out to buy any flea drops yet.

We've got some of that flea spray stuff for the home but its pointless using that until we've treated him.

Will just washing towels and bankets kill them or do they need the spray stuff? Help me!!!!!

get your hands on some Frontline and treat the dog ASAP - it is the best thing!
In th meantime - just keep using the spray - until the dog is treated there is not much else you can do -

dont panic firstly. they have been there for days and one more night till you can get the flea drops wont matter-honest!
Dont buy supermarket rubbish stuff, you need frontline or something else from your vet.
Do spray the house once you have treated the dog, whole house in one go as eggs travel on your shoes. Hoover, spray then dont hoover for a few days to let stuff get into carpets.
Yes-wash beds etc but need to spray as well.
HTH!

I think you can get them injected with something so that the fleas don't like their blood. Assume it's harmless to the animals. I think if you put the stuff through on a reasonably hot wash (60°), it should kill them. For stuff you can't wash, you definitely need to spray it...

Thanks but one more thing....

We've got laminate flooring and leather sofa can we use the spray on them?

I don't think you'd need to. The spray is (I think) for carpets and fabric because they can lay their eggs in the fibres. If you've got laminate, I don't see how they could lay their eggs; ditto with the sofas. Perhaps you could just wipe down with something and see how it goes??

miggy · 04/10/2006 21:56

laminate they could get in the skirting board bit-if you have them and leather sofas in the bit your change falls down (see the dark crevice theme here!)
Injections are for cats not dogs.good spot on will be fine

I'll be off to the vets then ASAP to get some drops and get him sorted. We're off on hols early Saturday morning and the dog is going to my mums for the week so at least we'll be able to get the house sprayed while he isn't here. (then probably have to spray mums house lol)

spray corners and skirting boards and anywhere else where there is not much traffic in your house - Behind sofas etc.

mummymic · 04/10/2006 22:19

hello - feed your dog garlic!!! fleas dont like it and wont stay! if yuo use it all the time the fleas can smell it and dont jump on the dog! makes their breath smell though! lol x

BATtymumma · 04/10/2006 22:23

has to be frontline.

you can buy it from teh vets at about £30 but there is a site online whereyou can get it for £22. i will see if i can find thelink and post it..but if you search fr frontline you will find it.

my mums dog got fleas wnad we justbouht the Bob martin stuiff from pets at home....its complete pants and teh house ended up infested with the bloody things as they just weren't shifting.

frontline got rid of them all in a couple of days

geekgrrl · 04/10/2006 22:27

I don't think you need to stress about the house, once your dog's been frontlined they fleas won't have anything to feed on and will die. As long as you give everywhere a good vac, particularly along the skirting boards, and wash the pet bedding, you should be fine (speaking from experience here).

PhoenixGhoul · 05/10/2006 08:08

So if they only hang about if they've got something to feed on we should be ok then cos we're off on holiday on sat so they'll be no one home for a week. Still gonna spray tho i think.

yeah, you might as well - you only need to do the crevices though if you have laminate .

PhoenixGhoul · 05/10/2006 09:51

Been to vets got some frontline. She said it would also do the environment over a few weeks as new hatched ones would bite the dog and die cos he' been treated but because there's no one in the house for a week the eggs would lay dormant and then as soon as we came home they'd all hatch. Yuk. So better to spray and wash everything on high temp before we go.
