Cat with an upleasant bum

Actually, it's poo that gets stuck around her bum. She's about a year old and not v long haired. Incredibly lazy and over weight, god knows how as no one else can possibly be feeding her - she rarely moves from our bed/the sofa. Have taken her to the vet, she's on diet food and is wormed, gulps her food - perhaps because she was a stray (we got her from RSPCA) a lovely cat but don't want cat poo in the house and particulary around two small girls who adore her and constantly pick her up. We love her v much and give her complete run of the house but can't cope with skid marks on the duvets much more. My washing machine is in over drive. Any ideas? The vet shaved her bum which helped and suggested we do it on a regular basis .....???

If my cat gets cling-ons we wipe her with wet wipes afterwards. If it helps why not continue with the shaving?

cats with longer hair often have this problem. If you can;t shave, try cutting (carefully!) with scissors. wrap her up in a towel firmly with legs inside - and is easier with two people - otherwise it'll have to be a trip to the vets occasionally for a shave.

This happened to me but only when my cat got old - can she reach to wash her bum?

It may be the weight getting in the way - in which case you may have to get the dds to embark on an exercise programme for her (lots of chasing toy mice...).

In the meantime, I found restricting - a bit - where she could go and putting dark towels on the danger zones helped.

I would wave bye bye to a cat like that

sorry

suejoneziscalmernow · 04/10/2006 10:29

good point about the weight an not being able to reach. Cut down on her food again and give her food as a reaward after playing wiht her out in the garden. You could also put food nside toys out in the garden to help her learn to play.

Cats on their own forget how to play so you need to make a special effort to play with them. It's one of the reasons I got two together, they play together and even when they age a bit they keep chasing each other around. Even my slightly chunky boy keps his weight down that way.

It's boot camp time for kitty I think!

Thanks, and have wiped her with baby wipes so will have to continue and/shave cut. Enid, the girls would be SO upset, as would I and I think it's a pretty crap example - cat has a shitty arse so get rid - but I can also appreciate (too well) that it's absolutely revolting.

Is there such a thing as a cat with a pleasant bum?

sykes · 04/10/2006 10:41

Probably not but a shitty one is disgusting. Our wonderful old dog who died two years ago was incontinent but I just didn't expect it from a cat.

probably is the weight problem that's stopping her from cleaning properly but i also remember reading advice from a vet about this problem and it said that actually putting a bit of cat food on their bums will encourage them to clean there. I remember wetting myself laughing when i read this but it may be worth a try. sorry just thinking about it is making laugh again!

ilovecaboose · 10/10/2006 21:44

ah this reminds me of the time (a couple of months ago) when I found one of our cats with butchers string trailing out his arse. Oh the vet trips (and bills) and the fact we couldn't just pull it out.

Sorry no real point to that.

We used to have a cat with this problem and you are right, it is horrible. We had to keep her back end 'trimmed' and also gave her a bath now and again because she would develop an aroma after a while. Luckily she was a darling and just sat in the bath looking miserable but didn't attempt to scratch or bite. (I wouldn't have dared to try it with our other cat, there would have been blood-shed for sure!). We just used baby shampoo which didn't seem to do her any harm.

tubismybub · 12/10/2006 10:22

LOL caboose we had similar experience with DS and a very long beansprout except no vet required just a gentle tug.
