In brief: 3 year old labrador bitch, has been on heat once (14 months ago). Hasn't been on heat since.

I think she should be on heat every 6 months i.e. she has missed two. Is this a problem?

Give her some wine.

Sorry it's Saturday night and I'm a little drunk. At least it's a bump.

this is not meant to be patronising but some doggies are so clean there is no trace of blood, have her bits/boobs swollen up at all?
any reason she has not yet been neutered?

Her mum (8yr old) is very very clean when on heat, but all the interest in the 'rear end' is very obvious, so is the sight of her trying to cleanup the floor. But I understand what you mean, I just don't think we've missed it.

Her mum was neutered with the plan to neuter Guinness 6 months later (didn't want them both done at the same time). Vet told us they can only neuter exactly halfway between cycles i.e. 3 months after being on heat ... we're still waiting so we can work out when 3 months later is ......
(hope that makes sense)

If you're worried, get her checked by your vet. But remember, although 6 monthly seasons are the "norm" they are by no means the necessity, ie, some bitches have seasons every 3 months, some every 12 months. If you want to get her spade anyway, the chances are your vets will do it for you now - always worth having a chat with them and see what they say.

Good luck.

wriggle, it is really important from a behaviour point of view that you dont get her neutered/ spayed if she is coming in/ going out of season. there are lots of vets that will neuter even in season but it does notmean it is right. all vets are different. you increase the risk of behav probs if you do not neuter in between seasons.

Hi, I'm not a vet but I work at one.
It is not that important to spay a bitch exactly half way between a cycle. Our policy IS no sooner that 8wks from the day her season has finished. The main reason is they are more likely to pick up an infection is spayed durning or soon after a season.
Some bitches dont have seasons every 6mths thats is just the average. A friends dog only had 1 season at 6mths and no others untill she was spayed at 6yrs!! If a bitch does not come into season often (every 6-12ths) it is at risk of getting pyometra (infection of the womb) I dont want to scare you but it is quite common and can be fatal.

I would seriosly advise you to go and see your vet or ring them up and ask to speak to a nurse.
hope you get things sorted
Jodie

Thanks, have been to vet now. Vet recommendedgetting her spayed sooner rather than later.
